Pearl Harbor |
A day that will live in infamy. |
When World War II started, it was not about a war with America. It was a war within Europe. The Japenese attacked America because they thought of us as a dangerous enemy and wanted our oil. They had thought that we would ally with Europe. They then decided to attack us at Pearl Harbor because it was the nearest threat and had a large navy base. Pearl Harbor was attacked on December 7, 1941 at 7:56 A.M.on Sunday. Pearl Harbor recieved it's name from the pearl oyster that once lived in the water. The attack on Pearl Harbor were sudden, and the military had no time to act. The Japanese had stripped the armor off their plane to counter act the weight of the torpedo. The victim rates were catastrophic, 2403 people were killed and1178 people were injured in the attack. The Japanese attacked the island of Oahu. Just outside Pearl Harbor, the Japanese had a submarine. And miles off the coast, they also had aircraft carriers two hundred miles out. The targeted ships of the attack were the Arizona, Oklahoma, Utah, the Cassin, and the Downes. Out of all the ships the Arizona took the most damage. The Japanese attacked mainly the ships centered around Ford Island. All of the Arizona's crew were on board preparing to sail away. And when the attack happened that was the Japanese main target. With no warning almost all the Arizona's crew died. There were only 7 survivors from the Arizona. The Arizona had been hit by one torpedo and eight bombs. When the third bomb hit the Arizona, "it was like a huge hellish fireball rising into the sky". Much similar to the fireball when the second plane hit the World Trade Center. The Arizona was one of the first ships to go down. The Arizona was sunk in the first of three waves of attack. The Japanese carriers were located just out of the Middle Loch. The number of U.S. ships destroyed was 5 battleship, 3 destroyers, 1 minelayer, 1 targetship, and 2 cruisers. Many other ships were badly damaged, but salvagable. A few even washed ashore. During World WarII, many Americans went on rationing. They rationed food, water, and gas. There was even a copper shortage, so they minted money with steel. All this was given up for the army. Women participated in the war, but not by fighting. They built airplanes, guns and bullets. They also did jobs that only men use to do. African -Americans also had more opportunities at the time. The amount of women working increased 4 million in only 4 years. United States and Canada classified imigrants an enemy. People became prejuduce towards Japanese in the U.S. More than 110,000 residents of Japanese Ancenstry were relocated to Relocation Camps. As a result of this, many people lost their jobs, and houses. And more than 2/3 were citizens. After the attack on Pearl Harbor America was not so isolated anymore. There was a wave of patriotism. The war with Japan ended with the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. After the war, the United Nations was developed. The Arizona and Missouri now have walking tours. In the back of the Arizona there is a granite wall and all the names of the victims in it, and a hole in which bodies can still be seen. |
