in which stefan & kinga go go visit kinga's grandma's farm in a little village east of warszawa called klukowszczyzna (kloo-kov-shchiz-na), that consists of as far a stefan can tell a road & about 10 medium/small sized farms of which are run by maybe 3 extended families, (i.e. kinga's grandma's nieghbor is her brother), & anyways stefan & kinga stay there for about 3 or 4 days to help out & also relax & stefan gets to learn about the farm & helps with the cows & drives a tractor & feeds the animals & rides a neighbor's horse who came over from his place down the road on his horse & wagon to visit. & they also go to a nearby town with a big church for a religious holiday & there are a thousand people there from all the farms from all over the county for thechurch holiday, & there are poeple selling gifts & stuff & icecream & cotton candy, & picnicing next to the church, & there were pilgrims who walked all day to the church singing songs, & then all day home again after, & stuff like that. & stefan also rides a motorcycle for the first time in his life, & probably his last. it was some old russian bike. & then he buys a bike from the town "mechanic" who is basically some guy with wrenches to takes old bikes & fixes them up a little & sells them cheap, & stefan takes it back to warsaw to use. & they visit kinga's uncle's new property that he is growing sunflowers on & has an old original farmhouse on it that is really cool, a real log cabin with 4 rooms including the pantry. stefan thinks he would really like to go & clean it up & live in it on summer weekends or something like that. it has no running water or electricity, there is a well outside, the kind that is a round deep hole with the rope & crank & bucket, & there is a cellar underground next to the house where potatoes & food like that was kept, & the kitchen has a huge wood burning stove & oven for bread, & all the doors are 5 feet tall & 4 feet wide. & also there are lots of storks everywhere. they look kindof like a big heron, with a long beek & long legs, & are white with black wings, & they walk around on the fields & make huge stick nests on the top of roofs or telephone poles, so they are not very shy, like herons are. they probably eat bugs & toads & mice, which live in the fields. |
