The Beginning of Carousel Rabbitry

    As a young teenager just graduated from the eighth grade, I was visiting my aunt in Salina, KS. My younger cousin and some of her friends said they were going to go see some baby bunnies.  I never saw baby bunnies before, so I went along. Two houses down in an old man's backyard were at least ten white rabbits and even more white babies. They were as cute as could be.After finding out that he raised them for his table, I took up a babysitting job to buy a bunny from this old man. For $5.00 I bought a baby doe.I named her Josette and after some reading I found out she was a New Zealand White.

    As an adult with a three year old child, about to turn four, I saw an ad for free bunnies. Remembering my Josette being the best pet I ever had, I wanted to get my son a rabbit. After calling the number in the paper and finding out that they had been taken, I was given another phone number who would have bunnies for sale.I called this number and went right out to a house that had more bunnies than I had ever seen in my whole life. My son picked out a Broken Tort Buck Holland Lop. He called him Hopscotch.

    Hopscotch was all we had for a year not knowing if we really wanted to breed or not. That is, until we showed him at the Salina Fair in 1998 and met two of the nicest girls I had ever met who told me of a whole world of rabbits that I never knew was there.Well, I had to be a part of it. So from there my rabbits took off. I soon gave my rabbitry a name, Carousel Rabbitry, a name that came from a wish I had as a child.

    We have experienced so many losses along the way, but hard work and determination has been well worth it.

    When people ask me, "Why rabbits?", I don't know where to start. But I always end it with, "Even if I decided I didn't want anything to do with rabbits anymore I couldn't get out of them because I have made so many friends through the shows and continue to make them at every show I attend. That alone is too much of a loss to leave behind.

This is a 2001 true story

   I have read a heart breaking story that all should be aware of. It involves an evil child, an irresponsible mother and a judge who has let us all know how much he hates animals and the people that own them.

   Read about Colin Calvert in Kansas, a 7 year old boy that broke into a rabbitry and tortured rabbit after rabbit by throwing them, punching them and kicking them for hours. He left their broken battered bodies still alive for Molly to find. Colin's neglectful mother doesn't care that he has an evil nature and encourages his behavior by doing nothing about it. Judge Mathis pats the boy on the back by letting him know he will make every excuse there is to keep the boy destroying animals and the people that love them!
