Under the Yoke Ivan Vazov’s (1850 - 1921) epic novel entitled Under the Yoke depicts the suppressed yet glorious uprising that broke out in the year 1876 against the Turkish occupation that had lasted for nearly 500 years. The novel presents the life of the Bulgarian people in the last decade of the occupation, the tyrannical and ruthless world of the Turkish oligarchs, the tremendous mobilizing power of the apostles of the revolution and finally the revolution itself. The work is not merely a historical novel but a heroic poem. The characters of the novel, such as the so-called chorbaggies (a wealthy class), the either conservative or progressive priests and the typical peasant and revolutionary figures are all depicted with deep affection and contribute to a detailed tableau of Bulgaria during this period. Under the Yoke 9 x 55 minutes series |
Among my many projects at Boyana Film was responsibility for the financial and physical management and production of the 9 x 55 minutes television series "Under the Yoke", based on the classic Bulgarian novel by Ivan Vasov. This co-production with Hungarian Television involved a literal cast of thousands, including millitary assistance for studio and location shoots. |
