an ancient city north of the Dead Sea, now in Isreal, occupied from c.9000
BC and one Oxford dictionary) ???? of the oldest continously
inhabited cities in the world. Little remains of the late Bronze Age period, the probable date of its destruction by Joshua recorded in the Old Testament.
