Broken English

Directed by Gregor Nichols
Released in September 1996

Ivan is the fierce patriarch of a family of Croatian refugees in Auckland.
Nina is his daughter, ready to live on her own, despite his angry objections.
Stephen plays Ivan's old drinking pal and best buddy.
Broken English is a Romeo and Juliet story of two star-crossed lovers who come from very different worlds, but are determined not to let their ethnic backgrounds destroy their love. Sultry newcomer Aleksandra Vujcic makes a breathtaking debut as Nina, a fiercely bold and independent young woman who fled war-torn Croatia with her family to settle in Auckland, New Zealand.
Her volatile father, Ivan (Rade Serbedzija), overprotects his children, suffocating them with what he believes is love--and is intensely jealous of any young man who so much as looks at his daughter.
