I've been looking for a machinist style chest for some time and the king of them all are made by Gerstner. Being a woodworker I wanted to build one myself but wasn't sure on some of the construction details. I've picked up some tool chest plans and seen a few in books, but I just happened upon this one on Ebay. It's a fine old chest that needed just a little bit of work to bring back into fine shape. I cleaned up the leatherette covering and latches and replaced the corners, felt lining, and the mirror.
Woodworking tools aren't machinist tools and some of the things I wanted to store are a bit large for this chest. Hey, sounds like the start of a plan for when I build my own! I do plan on building a chest to store guitar setup and repair tools. Things like fret files, small saws, radius gages, fret pullers and the like.
I really like the covering on this chest. It reminds me of guitar amplifier cabinet coverings. I plan on building a roll around base to store hand planes and other hand tools next spring. I'm thinking of covering it with the same material. It will be different !
