DISHING UP STAR TUCKER
New Idea, 2nd September, 1989

For the madcap stars of The Big Gig, beer tops the list of favourites at the canteen in the ABC's Melbourne studios.

The canteen, run by head chef Julie Walker, is one of the few licensed studio canteens in Australia.

The Doug Anthony All Stars could not be more pleased. After hours of rehearsing, they love to wind down with a glass of beer.

Says Tim Ferguson, 24: "I think it's great that the canteen serves beer."

Paul McDermott, 25, quips: "We sweat a lot and drink a lot. We are really just overrated water canteens."

The stars of The Big Gig may be zany on the set but meal times are a serious business.

The Doug Anthony All Stars love to munch on rich chocolates and stickly lollies, but the show's host Wendy Harmer opts for more nutritious meals.

"I usually like whole-grain sandwiches with salad, but I always pick out the alfalfa sprouts - they seem to pervade everything these days," says Wendy.
