There is a beautiful valley belonging to the same Brooks family who made available the land for the 'Brooks Lookout' overlooking the Blyth plain. It is in the north west of the area of hills and valleys known as 'the Clare Valley'. This composite photo was taken near sunset on a spring afternoon.
It is a pan taken with a Canon PowerShot 5MP camera. The composite
image is 8131 x 1794 pixels.
Sheep in late afternoon light
On this afternoon I did not have great hopes of the light being kind to me. There was quite a bit of very slow moving cloud near the lowering sun. However, the gods were kind to me; there were a couple of periods of sunshine just as I had managed to very patiently move up close to a small flock of sheep.

Toward Blyth
A detail from the photo on the left
I am lucky to have a property near the top of the hill where the road from Clare winds down to the Blyth plain. I try to get to the top of the hill with my camera as often as possible when the weather conditions seem out of the ordinary.
Original is a 35mm negative. Scanned at 3360 x 2240, 7MP.
Toward Blyth 2
Early morning, the sun is behind me, not yet shining on the trees around me, but lighting up the distant Blyth Plain.

Vineyard 1
Vineyard 2
No collection of photos of the Clare Valley would be complete without including a vineyard. These early spring views were seen at Armagh. The buds on the vines were about burst.

I liked the contrast between the bright sunlight on this almost backlit bluegum and the shaded background.

Early sunlight on native bush
The low sun is throwing a slanting light over an area of better than usually preserved native bush in the Clare hills.

Seen on a long walk.
It is remarkable how a couple of bends in a narrow road can improve the photographic apeal.

Changing the apature has resulted in a different degree of bluring of the background.

Spring vineyard
A weak and watery early morning sun is catching the vineyard on my neighbour's place to the south. The horses grazing in the foreground and the misty hills in the distance both add to the photo.

Bob Boud of Ingomar has planted the scarlet flowing Callistemon trees along this section of the Old Blyth Road. They flower when the vineyards are coming out into leaf in the spring.

Hill River Valley
There are many pretty views over the rather confusingly named Hill Valley. This one was from a lookout on the western side. I'm sure many people take even more photos from this lookout. I could have done a panorama, but settled for this telephoto shot of a very small part of the whole.

Jacobs Range Road Vineyard 1
Jacobs Range Road Vineyard 2
There are many back roads in the Clare Valley that are ideal for walking. Very little vehicle traffic and attractive scenery in many places. Jacobs Range Road is one of my favourites, not entirely because it is close to my property.
This new vineyard is the only one so far to be established on Jacobs Range Road.

Cattle on Jacobs
Still on Jacobs Range Road, these curious cattle walked right up to the fence to have a good look at my dog and me.

Sun going to earth
The sun is sinking behing three rows of ancient hills. The nearer hill is covered with blue gums (Eucalyptus leucoxylon), and the much more distant hills are nearly treeless. Another blue gum frames the setting sun.
The air was hazy enough to dim the sun to the point where it could be looked at for a few seconds without discomfort. Unusual with Australia's normally clear air.

Brooks' hill sunset 1
Brooks' hill sunset 2
Taken from near the top of a ridge, a couple of kiometres west of Armagh, that overlooks the Blyth Plain. An evening in late September.
I could not decide whether the verticle or horizontal format suited the scene better, so they are both here.
