The Funny Little Lamp
by the Story Making Mother
There was once a very
strong, brilliant lamp and a small, elegant lamp who
lived in a quiet, peaceful house. In that pretty house, you could look, but not
touch. Everything was clean and neat all the time, and the shiny things all
sparkled. Of course, since we would not be allowed to touch anything, it would
not have been much fun for you and me. However, that’s not how everything
stayed.
You see, one day, a red, yellow, and blue lamp was brought to the house. All of
the other lamps were annoyed that such a bright, funny looking lamp had
come to live in their pretty house. Still, even though they were mean to the
lamp, the little lamp smiled and tried to be nice to everyone. Sometimes,
though, she just felt sad. "Why does nobody like me?" she would say.
She felt better when the lady and her husband started coming into the room
where the lamp was every day. They both smiled at the lamp and said things like,
"Oh, how sweet!" It made the lamp happy for a while, but when they
were gone, the other lamps and the furniture would laugh at the funny little
lamp. It became harder to keep smiling, and after a while, the lamp was
almost always sad.
Finally, there came a day when nobody came into the room. The lady and her
husband, who had made the lamp feel so special, didn’t come home at all.
Everyone was worried. The desk said, "Who will dust me?" The strong,
brilliant lamp said, "Who will make my bulb glow with light?" The
little lamp wondered, "Who will like me?"
Luckily, it lasted only two days, and then the new lady came home. Her husband
was with her. There was even an extra lady with them, and this other lady came
into the room and smiled at the lamp and said, “How precious!” She brought in a
little baby and put the baby in a crib right next to the lamp. Now, every time
the lamp was lonely, the little baby smiled and laughed and made the lamp feel
special.
A few weeks passed, and the nice other lady went away. Now, just the lady and
her husband were there, and it seemed that they had new names. Now, they called
each other, "Mom" and "Dad." Dad smiled a lot. Mom just
looked tired, but as the days passed, they both seemed very happy. The lamp saw
them smiling, and she was happy, too.
One day, the baby was taken from the crib and put on the floor. The baby
crawled over to the couch and she bumped into the table that held the small,
elegant lamp. Mom gasped, and then she took the small, elegant lamp, and she wrapped
it in some newspapers. She found a box, and she put the lamp inside a box.
Then, she went to the other table and she did the same thing to the strong,
brilliant lamp. The lamp was afraid that she would grab her, too, but she was
up high on a shelf, and the baby did not reach her.
All of the furniture saw that the only lamp that was left was the funny little
lamp. They stared at the funny little lamp, and finally, the desk said,
"You’re not so funny, anymore. Actually, you’re just right for the baby. I
think we’ll call you the Baby’s Lamp."
That is still her name today, even though the baby grew up and learned to walk
and talk, and now she is a big girl who runs and jumps. Still, the lamp is up
on a shelf. And still, the family smiles at the lamp and says, "How
precious!" She is a happy little lamp now, and she is very
loved.
