This section displays a range of photos that we hope will capture the essence of life at Rich's.
Classrooms
Sir Thomas Rich's moved to its present location from the centre of Gloucester in May 1964. Amongst many recent additions and improvements to the facilities is a new quadrangle of classrooms (one side of which is shown here). This expansion was completed in 1994 at a cost of £1.2 million, and was opened by Mr. J.A. Stocks (Rich's Headmaster from 1961 to 1973). Just to the right can be seen the entrance to our Sports Hall and Fitness Suite, a £600,000 addition funded by the Sports Council and opened in 1999 By Mr.W.Hook (Old Richian and ex-England rugby player). |
The Bluecoat boy
Sir Thomas Rich's was founded
in 1666 as a Bluecoat Hospital for twenty poor boys. Sir Thomas Rich decreed
that the pupils should wear "blue coats and caps according to the laudable
usage of Christ Church Hospital in London." The blue drugget gown and
yellow stockings were replaced in 1882 by the modern equivalent, the distinctive
blue blazer.
This statue stands on a block of Forest of Dean limestone in the school
quadrangle. |
The school hall
Sir Thomas Rich's is the only school in the country with its own Bowling Green. It is available for use by senior pupils as well as being home to Sir Thomas Rich's Bowls Club. Beyond the Green is the School Hall, a particularly outstanding centre to school life with a fully equipped stage which seats the whole school (760 pupils) in morning assemblies. |
The millennium pond
The pond was recently built as a wildlife preserve by an enterprising member of the Biology department. It is sited in the G.W.Sheard Memorial Gardens, a quiet area where pupils can relax. |
The Quad, library and Sixth Form common room
The Bluecoat Boy statue in the quadrangle outside reception. This quad provides a focal point for the school. Behind the statue the library and Sixth Form common room are visible. The tree beyond is a liquid amber which produces a spectacular display of autumn colours. On the first floor are classrooms with laboratories on the second floor
and, just visible, a greenhouse on the roof. |
The quad and school hall
Another view of the quad with the school hall behind. Running in front of the Hall is "the moat", home to a family of highly-coloured (and well-fed) carp. |
The 'old' gym
The old school gym. This gym has recently been given a new lease of life with an excellent new floor. Gymnastics provides a vital part of the school PE programme taught in years 7 - 11. The gym also hosts extra-curricular activities such as indoor cricket (lunchtimes), table tennis (after school) . and exams! |
The Henderson quad
A view of the main teaching block from the sixth from garden. This is the new quadrangle, a landscaped area in which Sixth Form students can relax. It is named after Frank Henderson, a much-loved ex-pupil and teacher who also led the school's Venture Scout Unit for many years. |
ICT suite
One of our ICT suites. The school has two fully networked ICT suites, with a third under construction. They are used for timetabled ICT lessons, they are available for teachers to take classes into, for pupils to undertake research and they are fully occupied by the Computer Club every lunchtime and after school. |
Clive Stuart Smith
Clive was a pupil with us from 1994 until leaving with his A-Levels in 2001. An outstanding rugby player, he plays for local Premiership side, Gloucester, and has made several first team appearances in his first season. He currently captains the England U19 rugby side. Gloucester
