How will we achieve these goals?

• We will work on developing a feel for both the source language and the target language
• We will compare the languages and see language concepts in a broader picture
• We will learn how concepts are arranged and stated in different languages
• We will learn how your own language fits into the pattern
• We will learn about the differences among languages
• Our understanding of the differences in languages will help us explain things

• We will work a great deal on translation humor
  • We will present examples of humorous translations all around
  • We'll investigate improperly translated documents, street signs, and menus
• We'll present examples of documents that are intentionally translated differently in order to appeal to different cultures
• We will understand how different audiences understand the same document in different ways
• We'll translate the language of advertisements
• We'll design brochures in two languages in order to learn how to make distinctions among different cultures
• We will learn to avoid rote translations, while thinking of larger concepts
• We'll learn when to translate material word for word, and when to look at larger concepts, or at the entire document, page, or paragraph
• We will learn how to deal with situations in which the Hebrew original is problematic
• We will learn when we can make changes in the original, and how to present these changes to the author
• We'll learn about local and foreign tax regulations
• We'll learn how and when to speak to prospective clients
• We'll learn the approaches of other translators, in order to have a rounded view of the field
• We'll create larger projects under pressure of time in order to simulate the real world
• We will understand the purpose of a Translators' Introduction, and we may write one for one of our translations
• We may optionally re-translate material and then analyze how your translation is different and better
• We will prepare a serious translation together. You will then be able to tell a prospective employer that you already have experience translating
• You will learn how to get a job
• You will learn where to get a job
• You will learn how much to charge and how to update those rates
• We may prepare jobs for pay, in which the teacher may offer you jobs he would have taken for himself
• We will stay in touch after our course is completed, so that the instrucor can continue to offer suggestions and recommendations
• You will learn how to be independent as a translator

  You will receive certificate or letter of introduction at the successful completion of the course, stating that they took this course. That document will help you receive jobs as a translator
