A Laboratory Scale Coextrusion Line
A laboratory scale three-layer sheet co-extrusion setup is now available
at the process laboratory of the Polymer Processing Institute to evaluate
the feasibility of co-extruding three different layers of plymers in a sheet
form. The setup consists of one 1” diameter single screw extruder,
and two 0.75” diameter single screw extruders. The feed block was designed
at the institute and was machined by Center for Manufacturing Systems at
NJIT. Current feed block produces “A-B-C” type of structure.
Other feed blocks can be engineered to achieve different layer combinations.
The feed block is connected to a 10” wide flex lip sheet die. The maximum
opening of this die is 1mm.
A three-stack roller combination is used for conditioning and winding the
sheet. Two of the rollers can be maintained at constant temperature by circulating
constant temperature fluid. Online lamination can also be done. The sheet
can be used for thermoforming.
In addition, PPI's
Seven Layer Coextrusion setup with 34" wide sheet die is also avaliable
for pilot scale product development.
