A Couple Words About the Dachshund Breed
This is not a page for the "standard temperament", this is from my experience, my thoughts and my opinions. More then a few words comes to mind when I describe my little ones.  My-shadow, my-reason-to-steam-clean-the-carpets-every-other-day, my-lap-warmer, my-therapist, my-walking-buddy, my-personal-frustrations, my-secret-keepers, my-laughter, my pick-me-up-when-I'm-feeling-down, my-perfect-dog, my-nose-the-ground-hound, my-all-around-family-dog.  That's just a few of the things people hear when I describe Dachshunds.  In my opinion, they are the greatest dogs ever created.  Yes, they are hard to house train, but, so far, that is the only down fall I see.  Mine are NOT yappy, in fact, they are very quiet, and cuddly dogs.  Mine want to be near me always, weather I am on the couch, in bed, on on the computer, they are either in my lap, or at my feet.  They can be good with cats, I know mine are.  They are raised with them.  They are good with EVERYONE, as long as everyone knows how to treat them.  They are hardy dogs, they like exercise, they can sure keep up a pace, including running, they like action, they like playing, they are quick to judge your moods and are sensitive to all, they appeal to everyone with their small size, big brown eyes, three different coats and their dozens of color combinations.  To me, they are the perfect dogs.  However, I feel that this breed and I work so well together is because I am stubborn, firm and always attentive.  I feel that the best family/home for a Dachshund is one that is active, has people that are stubborn (you will need this when your Doxie smells something outside and you call him a thousand times before he even looks at you), a sense of humor (you will need this when you bring that can of rug cleaner out for the zillionth time, you need to be able to see the funny side of all that, the "I am the dog's slave" humor), and firm (to be alpha dog you need to be firm, and not let those brown eyes sway you).  Above all you need to give them all the love they give you, which is always ten fold.  These little dogs give so much unconditionally, all they ask in return in your time, love, family, and your training (all too important).  There is a lot to learn about this breed, so, see my links page for the Dachshund Club of America for the standard temperament and the AKC page for the breed conformation standard.
