The recreation of the Army of James II is something we take seriously - this is a very important part of the history of the British Army as this was really the first test of strength of the recently conceived standing army. Following the French model of the highly successful army of Louis XIV the army was commanded by the Earl of Feversham but was in some sense the responsibility of John Churchill later to become a famous British hero and victor of Blenheim. The colour of the British infantry coats was 'brick red' and can be seen in several period paintings from the end of Charles II's reign. Anyone wishing to get involved in the recreation of James II's army is welcome to get in touch - this is a seriously underrated period of history that really needs more focus. |
