MOON ASTROLOGY
One of the things that makes Sailor Moon such an interesting story is the basis of many elements on Greeks and Japanese mythology and astrology. While many of the mythology facts are well known and documented, some of the astrology links are more subtle, and may even be coincidental. Perhaps they are on purpose, and perhaps I am just an obssesive fanatic who sat through Geology 101 listening for references to the Sailor Senshi ^_^
*****Seeing as how I know WAY TOO MUCH mythology, I decided to make page to share my knowledge about how it relates to Sailor Moon. I hope this answers your questions. I have UPDATED this page and will again soon after further readings on Shinto. I will also add more SM characters. Please be a dear and sign the Guestbook!******
*Moon- The Greek Goddess Selene (called Luna by the Romans) drove the chariot of the moon. She fell in love with a mortal named Endymion while he was napping under a tree. She gave him eternal youth and life. Unfortunately, he slept always even when his eyes were open. Neo Queen Serenity uses the silver crystal to give everyone eternal youth and life. Selene wears a crown with a cresent moon on it. Similarly, Serenity has a cresent on her forehead and a beautiful tiara.
*In our modern astrology, which originated in ancient Babylonia and was popularized by the Greeks and Romans, the moon signifies happiness and emotion. It rules Cancer, Usagi's sign.
*NOTE: The names "Serenity" and "Serena," are not corruptions of the name "Selene" (pronounced SEE-LEE-NEE). Serenity was named after the Sea of Serenity, a region on the moon named by Galileo, where Naoko-san located her palace.
*Mercury- The Greek God Hermes (Mercury) was the patron of science, math, alchemy, law, and commerce. He was quick-witted, intellegent enough to fool anyone, and very good at solving the Gods' problems. Sailor Mercury is just as smart. As a baby Hermes invented the lyre using a turtle shell and fibers. Supposedly he could play it even better than Apollo who was considered the best. In SuperS, Mercury uses a lyre as a magical weapon.
*Mercury signifies intelligence and creativity. It rules Gemini but is also considered to rule Ami's sign, Virgo, which originally had no planet.
*Mars- Ares (Mars) was the God of war and was called "most hateful of all Gods" by his father Zeus. This is shown in Rei's moodiness and constant fighting with Usagi.
*Mars represents winning and action. It rules Rei's sign, Aries.
*Jupiter- Zeus (Jupiter) was the king of the Gods. Likewise, Sailor Jupiter is the strongest, tallest, and oldest of the Four Guardians. Zeus threw thunder bolts at mortals who angered him. Most of Makoto's powers have to do with thunder.
*In Shinto, the Goddess, Naru-Himme, personifies the planet Jupiter. Amazingly, she is another thunder deity. Wherever she throws a bolt becomes a sacred spot to her. She is also the Goddess of trees. Jupiter has the attack "Oak Evolution." Her name, "Kino Makoto" means "sincerty of tree."
*Jupiter symbolizes prosperity and leadership. It rules Sagittarius, Makoto's sign.
*Venus- Aphrodite (Venus) was Goddess of love and most beautiful of all. Venus has many love attacks. She is considered most beautiful of all the senshi and is a former model. She is also obsessed with boys and dating, just as Aphrodite is devoted to her many lovers. Aphrodite is also associated with the moon. Perhaps this is why Sailor V has a cresent mark on her head and a cresent transformational locket. Sailor Venus also has cresent attacks and sometimes poses as Moon/ Serenity to protect her leader.
*Venus represents love and passivity. It rules Libra which is supposed to be Minako's sign. Actually her birthday is on the cusp of Libra and Scorpio. A cusp is the few days around the end of one sign and beginning of another. This means she possesses traits of both signs.
*Chibi Moon- mostly the same as Moon.
*Chibi Chibi-mostly the same as Chibi Moon and Sailor Moon
*Tuxedo Kamen- Endymion (Mamoru in his royal form) is based on a mortal of the same name loved by Selene. See Moon.
*Mamoru's sign is Leo which is ruled by the sun. The sun symbolizes success and the self. Though Tuxedo Kamen is associated with the earth, our planet is not considered a planet in astrology. This is because astrology predates the discoveries astronomy's facts.
*Luna- Luna was the Roman name of Selene. This cat doesn't have much in common with the Goddess.
*Artemis- Artemis (Diana) was the virgin goddess of hunting. She was also one of the three moon goddesses along with Selene and Hekate. They represent the phases of the moon Waxing, Full, Waning, and New. New moons can not be seen and thus have no goddess, but sometimes Aphrodite is associated with them. Artemis' twin brother Apollo was a sun god. This cat has little in common with the goddess. In fact, his name isn't even pronounced the same. The original pronounciation is "Ahr-TEE-Miss."
*Diana- Diana was the Roman name of Artemis. This cat has little in common with her.
*Pluto- Hades (Pluto) is the god of the underworld kingdom of the dead which also bears his name. Hades means "the invisible one." He is dark and carries the key to the highly guarded gates of his kingdom. Sailor Pluto has a dark complexion, is very secretive, has death powers, and carries the key to the gates of time. Hades is also a god of gems and metal since these come from within the ground, part of his kingdom. This is probably why the Garnet Orb is assigned to Sailor Pluto. She controls time unlike Hades, but more like Kronos. See Saturn.
*Pluto symbolizes power and secrets. It rules Scorpio, Setsuna's sign.
*Uranus- Uranus, who has the same name in Latin (though sometimes spelt "Ouranos") is the god of the sky. He was father of the Titans (giant gods) of whom the oldest was Kronos (see Saturn). Kronos took over and castrated his father, flinging Uranus' genitals into the ocean. The ocean then magically gave birth to Aphrodite the love goddess. This is probably why Sailor Uranus is the lover of Sailor Neptune. The castration is also one of the reasons why Sailor Uranus is so androgynous.
*Uranus represents freedom and individuality. It rules Aquarius, the sign of Haruka.
*NOTE: Uranus is not to be confused with Hermaphrodite, the god of hermaphrodites. That god was the son of Hermes and Aphrodite (hence the name) and scorned a nymph who loved him. The nymph cursed him so that they'd always be together. This merged their bodies into one having both male and female parts.
*Neptune- Poseidon (Neptune) was lord of the seas, sailors, and fishing. Neptune has powers of the ocean and is an expert swimmer. When Uranus' genitals fell into Poseidon's domain, they concieved Aphrodite. See Uranus.
*Neptune symbolizes inspiration and insight. It rules Pices, the sign of Michiru.
*Saturn- Kronos was the Titan god of time and of tilling soil. He was considered a butcher of gods for castrating his father and eating his children so as not to suffer a similar fate. However his eldest son, Zeus hid and was not eaten. Zeus then tricked Kronos into throwing up his brothers and sisters, saving their lives. For this Kronos was banished to the hellish land of Tartaros. He is depicted as carrying a scythe with which he castrated his father, Uranus. This image is one of the origins of the "Grim Reaper," who reaps souls as well as grain. He is also "Father Time," the old man who carries a scythe to reap away the past and make way for the future. You've probably seen images of this at New Year's. Sailor Saturn is also a dreaded, destructive figure whose Silence Glaive resembles a scythe. She has destruction powers and is associated with soil. One translation (among many) of her name, Tomoe Hotaru, is "Bandage of Soil." However she does not have any time power as does Sailor Pluto. See Pluto.
*Saturn signifies status and material things. It rules Capricorn, Hotaru's sign.
