Although a sugar glider is a fairly small animal, they still need rather large cages. This is due to the fact that they are aboreal and highly active little critters. In the wild they jump from tree to tree at night in search of the sweet nectar from the eucalyptus trees. When setting up your cage for your sugar glider, be sure to have plenty of perches, hanging toys, and multiple food dishes. Having multiple food dishes may sound odd, but I think it is best to stimulate their natural instincts, as sugar gliders are not domesticated animals, they are still wild. The reason for the multiple food dishes containing different foods is to stimulate their natural instinct of finding a new food source once one runs out. Same idea goes with pouches and/or nest boxes. In the wild they switch the place they sleep every night. Another idea instead of the bird perchs is to use branches from apple trees, but remember these trees cannot be treated with any type of chemical! |
