JOSEPH and MARY PIGGIN of 2 Sydenham

Joseph and Mary (nee Campling) Piggin were both born in Norwich, Norfolk in 1815. They
were married in 1836 and by 1837 were living in Braintree, Essex.
All of their family were born in Braintree between 1837 and 1857. The 1851census shows
that Joseph was operating a Drapery business in Bank Street,Braintree where he employed 12
people. Of their seven sons who survived to adulthood, six emigrated to Australia where
they now have many descendants.Two daughters and an unmarried son lived in London.
At the time of the marriage of their eldest daughter Ellen in 1867, Joseph and Mary were
living in Power Street South Hackney. Joseph's occupation is shown on the marriage
certificate as "Feather Merchant".
The 1881 census shows Joseph and Mary Piggin living at 2 Sydenham Villas, Summerhill Road
Tottenham.

Joseph Piggin died on 13th December 1884 aged 69 years in Summerhill Road, Tottenham.
(Registration District Edmonton, in the sub-district of Tottenham in the County of
Middlesex) presumably at his home. He was buried at Abney Park Cemetery.
In 1887, Mary married the Rev. Joseph Steer, the minister of High Cross Independent
Chapel. She died ten years later on 10th January 1897 aged 82 years and is buried in the
Piggin family grave at Abney Park Cemetery.
