Maps
This section is dedicated to old maps of Tottenham and the surrounding area with particular reference to 'Summerhill Road' and to show its origins and development over the past 150 years.
We have discovered a
wonderful printed map of Tottenham dating from 1619 which shows the old lanes and to whom
the original fields and lands belonged. The map is unusual because it's orientation is not
North to South but South to North. Thus Stoke Newington is to the top and Edmonton to the
bottom of the map. We have reproduced a very small extract from the original map, but it does cover the future 'Summerhill Road' area. Note that 'Blackhope Lane' is now 'West Green Road' but Philip Lane and the 'West Green' are clearly shown. Click [ HERE] to view the image |
The above map is an extract from a wonderful old map of Middlesex dated 1787. You can clearly see 'Tottenham' but it was then very rural and depicts the area before any real development. You can just make out what perhaps was Philip Lane but West Green Road did not appear to exist. |
The above extract has been taken from Faden's Topographical Map Of The Country Twenty Miles Round London 1800. This is a most wonderful map of London and to get a better appreciation you should logon to http://archivemaps.com/mapco/faden/faden.htm |
