Commonly Asked Questions About Savannah Cats
What exactly is a Savannah Cat?
A Savannah Cat is a hybrid made by crossing an African Serval with a domestic cat, usually a Bengal, Egyptian Mau, or Oriental Shorthair. The goal is to produce a cat with the look of the African Serval, but one in size and temperment that is more manageable. Our Foundation Savannah is an F2. Her father was a Bengal and her mother was an Egyptian Mau/Serval cross.
What are the differences between a Savannah and a regular domestic cat?
Savannahs are more outgoing and active than other domestic cats. Like Bengals, they are very smart, will play fetch, and enjoy playing in the water. They are very athletic and don't like to stay still! Another difference is that the Savannah is currently largest hybrid available. They are also longer and leggier than most other domestic cats.
Do Savannahs have wild personalities like the African Serval?
It is our experience that Savannahs have a more active personality, which must come from their ancestry. They are instintitive hunters and make themselves very aware of their surroundings. They are not, however, "wild," and should never be considered a threat. They are gentle, affectionate cats with great personalities.
Should I get two kittens?
As with Bengals and most other cats, getting two kittens is always a good idea if you are going to be away from home often. This also keeps them busy with one another while they are young and especially active. That, of course, also may "double the trouble" if you have two very active kitties! Savannahs also do well on their own, however, and getting one will just mean that it will need a little more attention from you.
Why should I buy a Savannah from Sunapee Breeders?
Although Sunapee Breeders is new to breeding Savannahs, that is the case with most breeders out there since the breed is so new. Being a newer breeder is also a benefit, especially since we're small, because we have more time to designate just to our new program. As with our Bengals, our Savannah is loose in our house - no cages! Shea, our female, sleeps with us and is accustomed to family life, so her kittens will be very social just as she is. Our male Bengal that will be breeding her, is also loose in our house, and has been part of our family for a few years. With both parents being in a household atmosphere, it is far more likely that the kittens will have unbeatably social personalities. Along with your great personality Savannah kitten, you also get: 1. A 5 day health guarantee 2. A health certificate ensuring your kitten is free from communicable diseases or viruses 3. Your kitten will already have had its first set of shots 4. A small bag of Science Diet Kitten Formula to get you started 5. A packet of information about your Savannah and Savannahs in general 6. Your kitten can be registered immidatley |

How much will a Savannah kitten cost me?
Savannah Cats are expensive! Because Savannah cats are rare and are difficult to produce, they are very expensive cats to purchase. All of our females are sold as breeders, and as such are more expensive. Please contact us for pricing. Shipping is available at purchaser's expense. |
