Game Story

EL PASO, Texas (Ticker) -- Minnesota waited nearly a century for a season like this. Rhys Lloyd kicked a 42-yard field goal with 23 seconds remaining as the 20th-ranked Golden Gophers edged Oregon, 31-30, in a wild Sun Bowl to reach 10 wins for the first time since 1905. Minnesota (10-3) overcame a spectacular effort by Oregon wide receiver Samie Parker, who caught a career-high and Sun Bowl-record 16 passes for 200 yards and two touchdowns in his final appearance for the Ducks. "Samie was in a zone today," Ducks coach Mike Bellotti said. Jared Siegel kicked a 47-yard field goal with 4:16 remaining to give Oregon (8-5) a 28-27 lead, but Asad Abdul-Khaliq patiently ran Minnesota's offense, keeping the ball on the ground to get the Golden Gophers into field goal range. With no timeouts remaining and Minnesota scrambling on third down, Oregon coach Mike Bellotti called timeout to ensure his team got back the ball. But the move may have helped the Gophers, who set up the field goal with one more running play. "I was a little shaky when it came down to the last kick, but all I told (Rhys) was to hit it good," Minnesota coach Glen Mason said. "My concern at that point was to keep my team off of the field to avoid a penalty." Oregon's hopes ended when safety Justin Isom intercepted Kellen Clemens on the first play after the kickoff. Clemens completed 32-of-43 passes for 363 yards with three TDs and an interception. "It was a whale of a football game," Bellotti said. Laurence Maroney rushed for 135 yards on 15 carries for Minnesota, which avenged a 1999 Sun Bowl loss to Oregon in which the Ducks rallied for a 24-20 victory. Fullback Thomas Tapeh ran for three TDs for the Golden Gophers. "It was a review of the 1999 game," Mason said. "It was a thorough, enthusiastic game in 1999 when we lost, and the same this year. But we won." Abdul-Khaliq was 12-of-21 for 172 yards. His favorite target was Aaron Hosack, who had six receptions for 105 yards. After a scoreless first quarter, the offense picked up in the second, when the teams combined for 31 points. Siegel's 30-yard field goal as time expired gave the Ducks a 17-14 halftime lead. There were five lead changes in the second half as the offenses continued to dominate.
