From its beginning in the antebellum South, tap dance has represented the fusion of multiple cultures. It left its first arena, the plantation, and found its way to the theater by way of mistrel shows and vaudeville. Truly an American art-form, theatrical tap dance, this melting pot of varying backgrounds and cultures, grew and prospered on the stage at the hands and feet of some of the most innovative performers in the history of American entertainment, though not without suffering through prejudice, segregation, and, eventually, the rise of film. |
