The house of the
former President Tyler is said to be haunted by a lady in
grey. It is not known who this woman is, but the lady of
the house has experienced her. The owner of the home is a
direct descendent of him. In fact, it is his grandson.
The Lady in Grey has been seen coming down the tiny
stairwell of the Tea Room. She may be a governess of the
former Presidents' children but no one really knows. Mrs.
Tyler has told reporters as well as tourists about her
experiences. One that comes to mind is where she was
entertaining guests in the dining room when the topic
came up about the Lady in Grey. Mrs. Tyler's cousin said
she did not believe in ghosts and suddenly from out of
the blue, an object was hurled or crashed near or at the
cousin. The cousin left, and refused to come back. Mrs.
Tyler's daughter or daughter in law has experienced
ghostly actions as well. Mrs. Tyler is a firm believer in
ghosts and she proudly discusses her experiences about
the Lady in Grey.
On this same stairwell, there is an odd image on the
wall. The wall is covered in a light pink paint but at
the quick turn of the stairs and the wall, the image
looks like a young Edgar Allen Poe. Some say it resembles
a chubby child but to me, it looks like Edgar Allen Poe.
This stairwell is located in the Tea Room of the home.
Unfortunately, there is no pictures allowed in the home. I
have taken the tour of the home and loved it!
Sherwood Plantation is located in Charles City County,
Virginia. This estate is a lovely home as well as a
wonderful educational site. It is highly recommended if
you visit the historical district, to visit this
fascinating piece of history.
