About the artist... Monica, born and raised in Alameda has enjoyed a majority of her life here on the island. After spending a few years working in such cities as New York, Los Angeles and San Diego the aspiring artist has settled her life here on the island in the bay. After spending many years coordinating events that include the Latin Grammy's, San Francisco Opera, Gay Pride Festival and a variety of Latin Music Concerts, Monica has now focused much of her life on making and developing her art. She's also devoting much of her time in assisting with the development of establishing art as a priority in the community around her. The Latin born artist has enjoyed promoting the arts in each professional position she has held. Monica is on the Board of Directors for the Alameda Arts Center and the Outreach Officer for Alameda Women Artist. She has curated and juried a plethora of exhibits here in the bay area, a few highlights... 2003 "Mujeres en Arte/Women in Art" at Corazon del Pueblo; 2002 "Stars and Sea" at US Bank in Alameda; 2002 "Pulse" which was endorsed by the Mayor Willie Brown and the San Francisco Arts Commission. Expression of moods, feelings, and personality are part of what Monica likes best about being an artist. She gets a rush when looking at a blank canvas and knowing she can soon fill it with color. As her hand moves over her work she is overwhelmed with the unique feeling of being both relaxed and exhilarated at the same time. This feeling comes from knowing she will create an art piece that is both unique and personal. Monica prides her self as a multi-media artist. Although she has worked with many styles she feels she's at her best when working in Oils, Acrylics and Pencils. As you look across her catalog of work it becomes apparent that her work is as diverse as the media styles she uses. All of Monica's pieces are inspired from personal experiences making each painting or drawing both personal and unique to her. In many cases her art displays the processing of life events ranging from minor to major. As a talented self-taught artist Monica continues to develop and study the arts. Monica enjoys meeting artists and encourages interested parties to contact her via email at sunflowermz@yahoo.com. |
