The Iranian Flag Before Islamic Revolution Lion: It is a symbol of power, also is the sign of the second month of summer (Mordad) in Persian calendar. Sun: The ancient Iranian religion, Mitraism, considered Sun sacred. Therefore, they decided to have the sun on their flag to worship and adore their wonderful and superb culture. 3 Colors: The three colors in the Persian flag were chosen by Nadir Shah (King Nadir, the founder of Afshari dynasty who salvaged Iran from a feudalistic state to form a unified country). Shape and Sword: Agha Mohammad Khan, the founder of Ghajar dynasty, changed the shape of the flag from triangular to rectangular. Also, he placed a sword in the hands of the lion. |

The Iranian Flag After Islamic Revolution When the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Iran was passed on in 1979, the Iranian flag changed. According to the Article 18th of the Constitution, the official flag of Iran consists of the three colors (green for Islam, white for peace, and red for valor) with the special symbol of the Islamic Republic in the middle (can be read as rendition of the Arabic word Allah which means God) along with the slogan (central stripes, Arabic words: Allaho Akbar (God is great), repeated 22 times). |
