KELLY Some one
who really intrigued me from childhood, I kinda grew up around the area of
Glen
Rowan, Victoria. We visited numerous times when I was a child, my great
great great grandmother was a native from the general area, and I still have
relatives there, (two different states in fact but only about 200 kilometers
apart by road, this continent of mine is a gigantic place). My Mother was born
and grew up in a place called Grong-grong, which is near Narrandera,
New South Wales, the two towns are about 20ks apart. (Narrandera derived from
the Aboriginal words Narrung durrung, which translated means "Place of
goanna or lizard". Captain Charles Sturt, the explorer, is credited with
being the first white man to observe the area, he passed through the district
on December 12, 1829, but was not, as many people contended, the first explorer
to cast eyes on the Murrumbidgee River. Yet another white man Charles Throsby
was there before, but not before the ORIGINAL INHABITANTS of course, well before
I drift off the point here too much Mr. Throsby saw with his very own white
eyes the upper Murrumbidgee- "Big Water"- in April 1821. Anyways back
to me, my interest was revived by a childhood friend, Margie, we went to primary
school together, in fact one of the most horrendous school excursions her &
I ventured on was to the Old
Melbourne Gaol, Victoria's oldest surviving penal establishment. I saw
death masks and other artifacts from 19th century gaol life. Night tours by
candlelight *shivers*. When it was first constructed, it was considered one
of the most advanced prisons in the world, and for me to actually go and witness
IN PERSON, the hanging place of Ned Kelly, excellent for a 10 year old !! Anyway
Margie's' parents had purchased the local Glen Rowan Trading Post, which sold
and traded in a lot of Kelly memorabilia. Back in the early 80's that's where
I was, as a child, lots of great memories, lots of weird ones, smiles still
come to my face this day (as they do) when I look back on some of those times.
And so to Neds' yarn................... "For
