When Nick was younger he had a best friend named Brent
"I will never forget the treatment I got a those two schools. I would
not classify myself as a nerd, but I was not into sports because I was
always singing and acting. Some guys held a grudge because I did
that and they always gave me attitude. They were always wanting to
start fights with me for no reason at all. If you looked at
someone the wrong way, or they thought it was like fighting and I
always walked away. But it was dangerous to turn your back
because those guys didn't care - they came after you anyway. I was
real small back then - half the size I am now - so I got picked on
all the time. They hated me for getting time off school and, in
their eyes, I wasn't one of them. I really wish I could have
enjoyed school but I hated it. I had no real friends because I was
offset from everybody else. I used to dread going to school and got
upset a lot. I don't know if it was because I was afraid of
getting into a fight, or I was afraid of school in general. I
think it was so unfair for the kids to treat me like that.
I never did anything to make poeple angry, or show off about my
singing. I was just doing the thing I loved. They went against me from
the start and there was nothing I could do to stop it. The girls were
just as bad as and they didn't like me either. It was like, Who is
he? Just because I wasn't popular or like the guys who did
sports, they didn't want to know me. They saw the cool guys being tough
on me, so they thought they had to do the same. When I was a
kid, I dreamed of having a pretty girlfriend and I had a crush on a
few girls, but they only wanted to hang out with the cool guys, not
me. I found that the girls hwo were kind to me back then were not
necessarily the pretty ones, but they were good on the inside.
Since I've been in the Backstreet Boys, I am always asked in
interviews, "What is your dream girl?' I tell the press that my
ideal girl is not some pin-up gorgeous model. I look for a girl who
has a good heart first, before I care about how they look. I don't
say that because it's nice nice and diplomatic, but because I
experienced the reaction from both types of girls when I was a kid
and the pretty ones didn't care. Because of what happened to me, I
stronly beliefve you should never judge people by how they look. The
only thing that matters is what's on the inside."
