RETRO ROCK RADIO SHOW 2-5-70 FMThis is a radio show recorded at the Jabberwocky Club in Syracuse, NY. It is not as complete as the tape immediately below, but may well be the source of it. I will gladly give credit here to the person who can tell me about the Retrorock Radio Show and how the next tape relates to it. 45 ? CA
RETRO ROCK RADIO SHOWThis CD-R is the same show as the tape above but with major improvements. It was mastered for CD from an original LP copy of the radio show. The entire show is on this disc including the original commercials that appeared on the show. Some may not like the commercials on here but, to me, they only enhance the disc as you can hear the radio special exactly the way it was broadcast the week of 12-21-81. Also, I doubt we will ever hear this material in better quality. Also includes 2 duets with Joni Mitchell from the 1970 British show. This disc is a real gem! Thanks, Josh! 60 A CD-R
SYRACUSE 2-5-70 JABBERWOCKY CLUBGreat solo performance. It is obvious that this was recorded well before Sweet Baby James became a big hit as it was recorded in a small club. JT also performs a bunch of unreleased songs. You really MUST click on the title here to view the song list. If Sweet Baby James is your favorite JT LP, then this is the tape for you. Excellent sound, too! 90 A- CA
JAMES TAYLOR SINGS JAMES TAYLOR (BBC 1970)Early solo performance from BBC Televison. Includes a wonderful version of the classic Beatles song With a Little Help From My Friends. Also the seldom-performed Greensleeves. 45 A- CA
MARTHA'S VINEYARD 3-70This is the same tape as STONEYBROOK, NY, March, 1970. I don't know which is correct. Sound may be lacking, but song selection is an A+. Songs from first two albums plus I'm A Man, Coca-Cola Song, For Free, Okie from Muskogee, Diamond Joe, and Tube Rose Snuff Song. 90 B CA
HARVARD UNIVERSITY, CAMBRIDGE, MA 4-25-70This tape is excellent. It is similar to Syracuse 1970 in feel and, songwise, is a cross between Syracuse 70 and Roses For Carole. Kurt Asplundh, whom I got this tape from, points out that this soundboard recording apparently comes from 2 different sets (on the same date?) because of the introduction in the middle of the first side of the tape. Songs include Okie From Muskogee, With a Little Help From My Friends, I'm a Man, and Livington Taylor's In My Reply. 90 A- CA
CAPITOL THEATRE, PORTCHESTER, NY 5-15-70This is a truly outstanding show. Unfortunately, the sound doesn't quite match the setlist. Lots of unreleased songs including the only version of Hound Dog I have heard from JT. 60 ? CA
ROSES FOR CAROLE (Berkeley Community Theatre 2nd Show 1970) Excellent early show with songs mainly from first 2 LP's. Songs include For Free, Okie From Muskogee, and Greensleeves 90 A CD
CLOSE YOUR EYES (with Joni Mitchell) Early 70's show split between James and Joni. Lovely duets on The Circle Game and You Can Close Your Eyes. Hilarious version of Steamroller. 55 A CD
ROYAL FESTIVAL HALL - LONDON, ENGLAND 10-29-70 This is the same show as the Close Your Eyes CD. However, it is more complete, containing some extra Joni Mitchell material that was not broadcast. Unfortunately, the only extra JT appearance is on A Case of You where he plays guitar only. However, it IS beautiful! 90 A CA
MIKE DOUGLAS SHOW 1970Very early television appearance. This is obviously from 1970 as JT's introduction is announced. JT does Sweet Baby James and Blossom. Also, there is a short interview. Johnny Cash says that JT's first network appearance is the one on his show (See below). This Mike Douglas Show was probably syndicated, but is definitely an earlier TV appearance than Johnny Cash's. 10 A- CA

ONE MAN DOG - THE QUADROPHONIC MIXESThis is one of my favorite JT discs, legitimate or otherwise. In the mid 70's there was a mini-boom in quadrophonic stereo. Systems were sold which would allow 4 channels of stereo instead of 2. Of course, the record companies jumped right on the bandwagon and released a lot of the biggest hits of the day in quadrophonic stereo. Unfortunately or not, quadrophonic never really caught on and was gone within a few short years. As quad never became popular the titles released in this format sold poorly, making them relatively rare. Thanks to this phenomenon we have quad versions of 2 of JT's albums, Gorilla and One Man Dog. Of the two One Man Dog is far more interesting. Five tracks feature different lead vocals than the regular stereo release. The mixes are, for the most part, different which subtly alters the texture of the album. There is also an extended version of Little David with an extra instrumental break. As bonus tracks all but two songs are repeated using more different mixes to create a second alternate version. This includes some instrumental only tracks and some with just JT and his guitar. This CD was mastered from an original quadrophonic reel-to-reel tape in pristine condition. Only a very, very slight bit of tape hiss keeps this disc from sounding perfect. This one is as good as it gets! 74 A CD-R

LIVE IN GERMANY 1986This is the same show as the one above. However, here the sound is absolutely pristine! This great CD-R was recorded directly from a European video laserdisc. It couldn't be more perfect. It also includes six additional unreleased live tracks from various sources. This recording is well worth having if for no other reason than the bonus track called You're Just In Love. JT does a funny, whimsical duet with himself on this Irving Berlin tune via a back-up tape recording. I once saw him do this trick live at Music Hall in Cincinnati back in the 70's. It is one of the best JT tracks I have ever heard. 80 A+/A CD-R

RISHON LETZION, ISRAEL ca. 1987Recorded from a live performance at Rishon Letzion (near Tel-Aviv, Israel) Excellent concert with the unusual sound of Hebrew being spoken as the concert was broadcast over and recorded from the Israeli Defense Forces radio station (Galei Tzahal). Hebrew spoken is the commentary of the DJ, who basically just reads off the list of songs. This tape came to me courtesy of James Meshel who has lived in Israel the last 25 years. 80 A- CA

BOSTON COLONIAL THEATRE, March, 1988Excellent show from which the James Taylor In Concert official video is taken. This is the longer version from a PBS broadcast with several songs not on the official release. Great performance of The Twist. Taken directly from the video of the PBS broadcast. GOING HOMESoundtrack to the excellent special shown on the Disney Channel. This is JT with his full band rehearsing on Martha's Vineyard for a 1991 tour. CAMDEN, NJ 7-12-95This fine-sounding show is from JT's 1995 Symphonic Tour. In most cases the songs don't sound tremendously different from other versions I have heard. In some cases, however, the backing is almost entirely orchestral. Surprises include a song called Fascinating Rhythm (written by George and Ira Gershwin), The Way You Look Tonight, and Wasn't That a Mighty Storm. This is a unique tape as far as I know. It is very lucky that the sound quality is so terrific. This was taken directly from a DAT of the show. One of my favorite JT tapes. 130 A CA

Sound is excellent as this tape was taken directly from a fine DAT of the concert. 140 A CA

E-TOWN (with Suzanne Vega)1997 Radio Show recorded at the University of Colorado in April, 1997. Broadcast May, 1997, on the national public radio network. JT performs 9 songs including Another Day and Line 'Em Up from Hourglass plus a short interview. Vega does 4 songs plus 2 traditional acoustic blues numbers by Cephus(?) and Wiggins. 90 A CA
HOWARD STERN SHOW 1997This is a very insightful interview show. I personally find Howard Stern to be a real jerk but, on the other hand, he does manage to get JT to open up quite a bit. James talks about his former drug problems, his marriages, and his music. The best feature, however, is probably his solo version of Joni Mitchell's Woodstock. He should put it on his next release. 55 A CA

PITTSBURGH, PA 7-18-97A great tape of a 1997 concert. The sound is really sharp and detailed. Having seen JT one week before this show in Dayton, Ohio, I can say unequivocally that this is almost exactly what the concert sounded like. This is one of the best-sounding "live" tapes that my ears have heard. My only quibble (a small one) is that the opening number is missing and also the first part of Another Day. Otherwise, this one is hard to beat. 135 A DAT
INDIANAPOLIS, IN 1997Full-length concert from 1997 tour. Unfortunately, this is, at best, an average audience recording with murky sound and crowd noise. This tape is not a necessity now that the above Pittsburgh tape has become available. For hard-core collectors only. 180 C 2CA

COMPILATIONS
IN THE BEGINNINGThis incredible CD-R collects performances from four different sources: 1. James Taylor Sings James Taylor BBC 1970, 2. Retrorock FM Show 1970, 3. Syracuse 1970, 4. The Bitter End LP, New York 1970. All the tracks have been recorded from excellent sources and cleaned up. I doubt WEA or Sony could have done a better job of making this disc as this is easily the best-sounding recording I have heard of this material. Awesome! 80 A+/A CD-R
The SYMPHONIC JAMES TAYLORThis CD-R is a compilation of unusual performances by JT. It includes Evening at the Pops (1993), I Bought Me A Cat with the San Diego Symphony (1995), the six tracks from the Canadian CD "Sweet Airs That Give Delight" and several bonus tracks from various sources. This is a must if you don't have this material already. In fact, it's very nice even if you do! 74 A/A+ CD-R
A LITTLE MORE TIME: THE HOURGLASS COMPANIONI have gotten more rave reviews from other traders about this disc than any other item on my webpage! This unbelievable disc collects various 1997 performances to make what amounts to almost an alternate version of Hourglass. In fact, I think it is just as good if not better! Sources include the Hourglass CD-Rom, radio and TV appearances, and a promo-only remix. There are also some more unreleased live tracks included. 65 A+/A CD-R
LIVE IN THE STUDIOThe first nine tracks are all of the songs from the "Timothy White's Rock Stars" radio show listed above in the 1988 section. The remaining 17 tracks are from various radio appearances between 1977 and 1997. The sound is excellent throughout and contains many rare JT nuggets including Woodstock from the Howard Stern Show and You Can Close Your Eyes from Fraggle Rock! 74 A/A+ CD-R
1997 TELEVISION TALK SHOW APPEARANCESJT appears on five different talk shows and performs 7 songs. Tonight Show, Letterman, Rosie O'Donnell, Today Show, and Good Morning America.
