A truce has been signed in Korea. There is peace again in the world.
Everyone rejoices, soon forgetting the horrors of war, they have heard.
But-Somewhere a mother sits alone with Dad at a table that used to sit three
A son-but Uncle Sam called him to help win the war overseas.
He left and is one of the thousands who'll never again see the U.S.A.
He's buried under dark, bleak skies where with other brave boys he was slain.
Somewhere a child's weeping softly for a dad who will never come home.
He misses his dad, whom he loved very much and who sailed away over the foam.
His mommy tells him that Daddy is up in God's far distant land
But as he is only a small boy of three, of course he does not understand.
A sweetheart dreams of the wedding day she was to have this June
As alone she stands, sighing sadly; gazing up at the bright yellow moon.
Her lover has left her also. She received word a year ago
That her darling had frozen on Heartbreak Ridge amid all the ice and snow.
a grey-haired lady sits dreaming of happiness long since gone
When a curly-haired youngster sat laughing at his grandma's cute little songs.
She'd often dreamed of the lawyer he'd be but it seems it was all in vain.
He became a soldier, was sent to Korea, where with hundreds of others, was slain.
Somewhere a soldier is coming back home with injury, sickness, and pain.
He will never forget the horrors of war or the battlefields where buddies were lain.
It is locked in his heart now forever; the terrible sight of war
And we would remember forever if we saw just half what he saw.
The servicemen on the battlefield; wounded and dead alike;
On the cold, barren ground of Korea - the graveyards of the night.
The long weary death march; the freezing; the starving, the tortured, the weak -
The prison camps with our heroes - Oh, What a sight they would be!
So although we may have our peace once again, remember heroes so brave and so true.
Somewhere, someone's heart is broken. Remember it might have been you!!
This world was once a wilderness so great and unexplored
But times have changed a lot since those good old days of yore.
Folks say we're getting civilized and I guess they should know
But if you are one of these - just listen to your radio.
Out in Nevada they're testing their bombs to destroy life;
trying to destroy their people with all this work and strife.
All over the world there is hatred for neighbors both loving and true.
There's no time to look at God's nature with all of its magical hues.
People don't mention their flowers - how beautiful the day might be -
Now all they can think of is war and the pleasure in it which they see
I alone can't change the world to see things through my eyes;
But, God, I hope to see the day when peace and love survive.
So when folks talk about civilization and progress that has been made
I smile as I dream of the heavenly hours back in the good old days.
I love this dear spring season, especially in Maine.
I think in no other place than here could it ever be the same.
It starts with the sun melting all the snow and the ice goes out from the lake,
And if you look real close, you'll soon spy grass growing down by the garden gate.
The springs will begin to bubble and the sun will begin to shine.
The days will get warmer and warmer and the nights will be subline.
If you go for a walk in the forest or maybe go over the dale,
You'll see many flowers surround you - they seem to be everywhere!
The apple trees will blossom and fill the air with perfume;
And leaves come out and you wait for the Mayflowers coming soon.
The birds singing in the treetops awaken you at dawn;
And the sun streaming in your window seems to say, "Awake, it is morn."
And among this bright spring gaity, your heart is filled with love
for all these little feathered folks who fly in the sky, high above.
Yes, spring fills your heart with beauty and love and places its song on your lips.
It makes you as light as a fairy and kisses your fingertips.
Yet, don't you agree that spring wouldn't seem quite the same or half as great
If we had to spend this heavenly time outside of our own Pine Tree State?
There stands a house upon the hill by the side of a very old saw mill.
The curtains are hanging and are also torn; the shutters are broken and look very worn.
The children around there you'll never see - but hear strange stories of what will be -
If anyone enters the forbidden grounds where unknown ghosts are now lurking 'round.
It seems the house is haunted now, but I remember the time, and how!
When I used to play with my friend, Marie, by the house and the pool and the old apple tree.
There was laughter and shouting and oh lots of noise! Around the grounds were scattered a lot of our toys.
Nothing was like the picnics at noon; but all happy days end - are over too soon.
I now come back to this house on the hill; the windows are broken and everything's still.
The wind blows through the house with a roar. I see it's deserted - as I look in the door.
I leave with a last look at the weed-covered lawn, where we used to play in the morning, at dawn;
The once beautiful house upon the hill is now very dreary and somber and still.
Oh well, times do change, as I now recall; and all of your castles soon have to fall;
So looking back over those childhood years, I look forward to other years - soon to appear.
George Fred is a little scamp. He's always making a noise.
He loves to tease you and make you cross, for this gives him much joy.
He's eight years old with big blue eyes
And on summer mornings he's up at sunrise,
But when winter comes along & the school year begins
Where is he, when it's time for school? He's still asleep. Wake him up if you can.
He builds him a camp up in the woods and says. "I'll sleep there tonight."
But when night appears, you'll find he's in bed. He prefers to stay where it's bright.
All summer long you can hear him whining, "Can I go fishing today?"
After standing this for a morning or two - You'll say he can.
When he comes home with his clothes all wet and he's soaked to the skin;
You ask him if he fell in. He says,"I decided to go for a swim."
So he's scolded and scolded until Mom is hoarse. Does he know what she said? Of course!
He knows he's committed a very grave sin so the next day he does it again.
He goes around bare-footed at any time of year -
When he is told to dress his feet, he acts as if he didn't hear.
He has a toothache and wonders why. He acts as if he's going to die;
But when you say, "I told you so." He quiets down for a time.
He raises cain from morn till night and goes to sleep on the floor;
Then when you tell him to go to bed, you can't get him out of the door.
In the morning when it's time for school this little boy will say,
"Oh, I've got a bellyache. I can't go to school today."
But this is forgotten as day changes to night
and all through the day, he'll stay home - fool and fight.
He usually looks like the holy terror. His dirty face is not an error.
They say that a mud pack's good for complexion. He thinks his face will soon reach perfection.
But even though these things are true there's something I can say,
I'd rather have him for my brother than anyone else anyway - anyday!
Tonight as I walk by the seashore I'm looking out over the foam.
As I watch the moon play on the water I think of the day you left home.
You were a soldier, called to your duty, leaving to protect your country so fair,
Holding me close as we kissed goodbye. You were so handsome standing there.
Often I think of the words you spoke. I think of the dreams we shared;
Of the memories kept when you sailed away at a time when both of us cared.
Two long years passed - of loneliness. Then a soldier came back home,
But it wasn't my lover, back to me a stranger came over the foam.
Now that I'm old and thinking back sometimes my memories stray
Back to the days of my first love and as I walk by the bay -
I picture his face as he left me as he said with a tear in his eye,
"Darling, I'll return to you someday. I'll come home to you bye and bye."
But as I stand in the moonlight the thoughts of the boy I once knew
All vanish away as the fog comes in over the ocean so blue.
But it's nice, I agree, to remember the fun of your first love life
For like me - you may never find true love and may never become a wife.
But when you are old and lonely just walk by the ocean at night;
For your dreams can't be taken from you even though your true love might.
Tonight I will write to my darling who is somewhere afar in Korea
I shall tell him just how much I love him and how much I wish he were here.
As I look from my window I can see the stars shining down upon me
And as I see the first star, I make a wish, "Oh bring my lover and fill my heart with bliss."
Will the star take my message to the Lord up above?
Will the star send my message up by a dove?
As I look at the stars in the bright sky and the moon with its bright yellow glow
I remember of evenings gone past when I watched the moon all alone.
Then an angel brought a wonderful guy to take away my loneliness
And we filled our hearts with this new-found love and sealed it with a kiss.
Tonight after writing this letter I shall pray to dear God up above.
I shall ask Him to save all the people defending the country we love.
And then, going back to my childhood,I shall stand at my window and wish.
I shall wish for a brighter tomorrow and a lover whose nearness is missed.
And somehow as I retire, it seems as if everything is okay
And soon God will end this war in Korea and my soldier back safely, He'll send.
Yesterday the word was "war". Tonight the radio shouts "peace".
How many times we've heard it,A hundred? fifty at least.
While men will talk, our young boys are losing lives by the score.
They're fighting on the battlefield; Hungry, cold, and footsore.
Why do they fight? Just ask them. Why? Oh, they don't know.
What a silly question, 'cause they must kill the foe.
Who is the enemy? Communism! What's Communism? Who knows!
It's something terrible to destroy 'cause Uncle Sam told them so.
Let's educate our people. Let's let them know the facts.
Let them read the plot of the play and not just be in the acts.
I'm looking at the sky tonight and thinking of you dear.
I'm wondering what you're doing now and wishing you were here.
The moon above is brightly glowing as once my heart was glowing too;
As I stood below it with my loved one and heard the whispered, "I love you."
The stars are shining in the heavens as once my eyes were shining too;
As I thought of my dear beloved and saw my dreams all coming true.
As I glance once more at the blue sky and see it for a second time
I see the clouds rise o'er the mountains and cover stars and moon so fine.
The moon above still may be glowing behind those dark clouds in the sky;
But my heart's broken and in sorrow behind this heartache that is mine.
The stars above may still be shining high up there in the cloudy blue.
Tears hide my once bright eyes behind them as I see dreams not coming true.
And though the world will go on living, and never mind my hopeless days,
My tear-filled eyes and broken heart stay with me since you went away.
And though I'll try to go on living; I'll eat and sleep and smile again
But the cloud that covers up my happiness will forever and ever remain.
These lonely nights without you are not too hard to bear,
For I know that you still love me. I know that you still care.
For if you didn't, you would not worry about me at all;
But I know you miss me darling, and I'm waiting for you to call.
I want to hear those words you said that made me so happy and gay;
The words that made my love for you grow greater day by day.
If you left me for another my heart would break in two;
But if you stayed when you loved another, I'd still be lonely and blue.
Please think these things over which you said you had to do;
And remember, I'll keep waiting for a decision from you.
Now make up your mind - Don't let me wait. I don't know what will be my fate.
But all I can do is wait and pray that you'll be mine forever someday.
Soldiers are nice, they're very sweet, they're cute and some are handsome;
But they are heartless, I've heard tell, they love some girls and leave some.
They do not care whose heart they break. It's all a game they're playing,
They say they'll ever more be true, forgetting what they're saying.
Yes, that's a soldier, or so I've heard but I don't believe all I hear;
For the soldier I know is cute and sweet. He is a perfect dear!
He's handsome and he's wonderful. These things they say are true.
But he's no heartbreaker I'm sure or I'd be heartbroken too.
I know he sees no other girl as he sees me, his own.
I know he's lonely but he still spends all his nights alone.
I'm not too lonely when he's not near for his thoughts are mine always;
And when he leaves me with a kiss, he sets my soul ablaze.
For he is always with me. His heart is mine to hold;
So I cannot believe the tales of soldiers - which I am told.
For my soldier is a darling, and will never cause me woe;
But continue to be the sweetest of anyone that I know.
For soldiers may be cruel, heartbreakers and untrue -
But the soldier boy locked within my heart will forever be true blue.
If I knew you loved me as much as I love you
I'd never have reason to fear.
If I knew you loved me as much as I love you
I know, I'd always have you near.
If you would only miss me the way that I miss you
And if you'd only kiss me like I want you to -
Why then I'd know you love me as much as I love you.
My heart would fill with happiness.
Whenever you leave me you seem so far away
And I am filled with loneliness,
But I smile when I dream of the time to come someday
When you'll never leave me but show me the way
To the church around the corner. "I love you," you'll say - and
My heart will fill with happiness.
I'm waiting for the day when I can say, "I do"
And spend all the rest of my life with you.
There'll be days filled with laughter and sunshine and joy
And maybe someday - a small girl or boy
Will come to share my happiness.
I fell in love last night, while moon and stars were bright.
The sky was very blue and I fell in love with you.
I couldn't believe it true. Everything felt so new.
The grass was wet with dew and I fell in love with you.
I always dreamed of falling in love in the spring,
When flowers bloomed and birds began to sing.
Now it is autumn, the leaves are red and gold
But I can hear wedding bells ring.
Ever since you kissed me 'neath the moon last night,
I knew I'd found who I was searching for all my life.
You're not as handsome as I dreamed you'd be
But darling, the things you do to me.
I wanted to be free. I wished the world to see.
I thought I'd find romance somewhere way off in France,
And then I saw my chance. I loved you at a glance
When you walked down the lane right near my home in Maine.
So girls don't wish to go across the sea
To find the guy whose wife you want to be
Because your lover may be found
Back in your own hometown.
He's not a saint, It's true but then who is? Are you?
And if you'd like to know - He's got faults, I suppose;
But he's the guy I love and who could ask for more
So wake up, stop dreaming, for love may be knocking right at your own front door!
TUNE (This is my task)
The time has come for us to say "Goodbye"
To turn our footsteps toward our goals so high
But through the years no matter what we do
We will remember true, the days we spent with you
Dear Winthrop High!
We can no longer stay within your walls
But must respond to duty when it calls
For each one, his own place in the world must find
Keeping an open mind to ideals of a kind
For Winthrop High!
No matter what the future years may bring
The memories of high school days will cling
And Winthrop High School's praises we will sing
Though we be old and grey, our mem'ries still will stray
To Winthrop High!
