Martinique Pictures

St. Pierre

The first shot from st. Pierre is of Mt Pelee, the volcano that destroyed the city in 1902. The second is the anchorage with Destiny on the right hand side.

These are also from St. Pierre but show some of the ruins left from the volcano eruption. The first is the cell of the only survivor (the stone dungeon protected him). The second is a statue from the remains of a magnificant theater that was leveled.

These pictures are from the Depaz Rum Distillery outside St. Pierre. They still use steam power to produce electricity and process the sugar cane into rum. The second shot is the plantation house built by the founder of the distillery, whose family had also been destroyed in the 1902 eruption. You can see Mt Pelee again in the background.

Fort-de-France

The first shot is the Schoelcher Library, the second is from inside the cathedral and the last is the view of the city from Fort St. Louis. This is only the center of the city - it has a population of over 120,000. It gets VERY crowded and has LOTS of traffic.

Miscellaneous

The first shot is of the Anse Mitan anchorage. Anse Mitan isn't much but Pointe a Bout (right next to it on the peninsula) is a tourist village with a marina and some very expensive shops and 2 fancy hotels. The next picture is Anse Noire where we stopped to fix the alternator. It was a very pretty spot but could only be a day anchorage at best - very small and enclosed. Finally, the last is Diamond Rock, a famous landmark, taken on our way to Marin. It doesn't look like it, but this rock is over 500 feet high and quite impressive with many huge caves. The English had it briefly during one of their wars with France (Martinique was still French). The French recaptured it by leaving barrels of rum on the rock. They retook Diamond Rock after the English came down to get the libation!
