Venezuela - Part 2
Gulf of Cariaco, Laguna Grande del Obispo
The first shot is of our friend's boat Survival, on a still morning in fantastic light. The second is of rings and a faint rainbow that I saw around the sun, the first time I ever saw this phenomenon. The next 2 shots are from our hike up the mountains on the Araya Peninsula; the first, one of the great views from the top and the next is one of the quartz outcroppings found up there. The next shot is a poor representation of the spectacular flock of Scarlet Ibis roosting in the mangroves near the Rio Cariaco. Finally, 2 of our "closest" companions, pelicans.
Juangriego, Isla La Margarita
These are from the town of Juangriego (John the Greek) on the north coast of Margarita. The fishing boats in the first shot line almost the entire beach there, and the church in the second was painted white and really shone in the afternoon light. Unfortunately, we never got to see inside.
Isla La Blanquilla
These shots, and the remaining ones on this page, are from Isla La Blanquilla, a beautiful place to enjoy the water, sun and solitude, if you want it. The first 2 shots though are from the main anchorage at Playa Yaque; the first is of the party we had on the beach the day after we got there and the next shows the anchorage as seen from the land. Notice the cactus and thorny bushes; its like that over the entire island, with almost no shade on this 60 foot high island. Its got a unique beauty though, quite different from the typical "tropical" island.
These pictures show what we really loved about La Blanquilla. The first shows Destiny anchored completely alone in a small cove near a beautiful beach, shown in the second shot. We spent 3 days here in glorious solitude.
The first shot is of the hummingbird, a White-chested Emerald, we found that had flown into our cabin. We tried to save him(her?) but it wasn't mean to be. He expired after 8 days and we buried him at sea. The next shot is of 2 of the "natives", Crested Caracaras, large birds of prey, that we saw frequently on the beach and on our walks.
Finally, the shot on the left is us on a small beach near the southern anchorage we visited. The next shows the effects of sun and wind on the trees that grow here.
