This page contains as its base all of the Beattie entries which appear in the Glenbucket OPR volumes. Where possible, It traces the various families forward in time until about the turn into the 20th century. Where possible it follows them backwards in time as well. This is a constant work in progress and hopefully a chance for various Beattie researchers to connect with each other. If you have additional information on people who appear here, or you would like to be noted as a researcher for a particular line, please let me know!

About 70% of all Beatty males tested so far appear to share a common ancestor who probably lived in the Border area of Scotland c 1400 or earlier. Badenyon A Beattie family is listed at Badenyon in the 1696 List of Pollable Persons within the Shire of Aberdeen (see below). The only reference in the Glenbucket OPR (which begins in 1719) to Beatties at Badenyon is the marriage of John Beattie & Sophia Michie in 1831 (see Deochry table, below). Since that particular Beattie family had their roots in Strathdon, and Sophia Michie's family was from Badenyon, one can probably discount any connection with the Wm Beitty and wife from the 1696 list.
1696: The "List of Pollable Persons within the Shire of Aberdeen" references the following Beatties at Badenyon. Note, that except for the children of gentlemen, the Poll Tax applied to those 16 and over who were not a beggar.

Deochry Members of the Beattie family are at Deochry from the 1830s to at least the 1920s. John Beattie, the first Beattie at Deochry, was actually born in Strathdon in the early 1790s. It is not yet clear when he moved to Glenbucket or who his parents are. My theory is that he is a son of William Beattie/Jean Stuart of Dykehead of Belnaboddach. There is a rhyme about the Deochry folk from around the mid to late 19th century which is still recited today: Elder Begg and Bellman Beattie Scott Stewart and skirlin Eppie Beardie fierce and Robbin strong And that completes the Deochry throng. "Elder Begg: ???" "Bellman Beattie" - A bellman was the man who rang the church bell calling the people to worship. Presumably this would have referred to John Beattie, Jr. Scott Stewart was born about 1837, the son of Robert Stuart and Helen Fraser. "skirlin Eppie" - "skirlin" means shouting or screaming (usually aplied to women) "Beardie fierce and Robbin strong" was Rob McPherson

M - Robert McPherson 15 Jun 1861 Glenbucket. D - 24 May 1910, Deochry, of old age. Informant is Robert McPherson, husband. Family is at Deochry in 1881 census. Husband Robert is not in the household. Jean is listed as married, head, farm servant's wife.

Death registration lists her as Helen Palmer, Domestic Servant (single), illegitimate. Informant is John Beattie, uncle. No father is listed on Hellen's birth record, however starting on the 1871 census, this Helen appears with the last name Palmer. She lived in the household of her grandmother Sophia at least through the 1881 census.

Informant Sophia McPherson, niece (present) John took over the family farming at Deochrie. He never married, but nieces Sophia and Jane McPherson resided in the household from a very early age. Netherton (1) There's some ambiguity about how the people in the earliest Netherton entries relate to each other, so those entries are shown first, with some commentary on possible identifications but without trying to fit them into a tree structure yet.

	note: James is new since 1696. Also, second William gone in this list.


Adam Beattie in Netherton b bef 1685 -- Same as the Adam from 1696/1699 lists? 1696 list shows him as already married, so he would have to have been widowed between then and 1702. Also possible that this Adam was another son of William who was not yet 16 at the time of the 1696 list, which would make this a fairly young marriage.

		Its possible this Jean could also be the one of the following record: Adam - 1811 July 16th Hary Reid in Ballachdue had a son baptised called Adam the mother Jean Bettie young woman in Netherton. However as this Jean would be 29 in 1811 - not "a young woman" - it is more likely that this record refers to the Jean Beattie b 1790 to John Beattie/Ann McHardy.

Dow, son This Alexander Dow is the cousin of the Alexander Dow who married Elspet Beattie (below). Alexander m2 Mary Middleton 23 Nov 1871 in Edinburgh. They had one daughter, Elizabeth, born 1873 in Glenbucket. Alexander emigrated to the US in 1886 per the 1900 census, where he is shown as a widower, residing with his son James in Beverly City, MA. However he shows up visiting back in Glenbucket in 1901, with the family of his niece Mary Ross (nee Beattie, below).

Helen Henderson was born 1861/62 in Keith, Banffshire. She died 7 Jan 1931 in Woodend Hospital, Aberdeen. James and Helen had seven children between 1884-1902.

		Note: the following information about spouse, death, and offspring is theoretical, and not yet confirmed. Identification pros: Elspet Beattie (first daughter, below) was at Netherton at the time of her 1849 marriage to Alexander Dow. Also suggestive is that Mary Tomlinson Dow (married to Norman Dow, son of William, below) spoke of visits to Stirling Castle during World War I to visit Col. Alex Beattie, who at various times commanded the Argyle & Sutherland Highlanders and South African troops--and who was a son of William Beattie/Elspet Middleton (above). Finally, there is also a Beattie family sampler with an "RBEB" inscribed in the list of family initials--possibly a reference to Robert Beattie having married Elsie Murray? Initials are worked in black, suggesting that the couple was deceased by the sampler's 1843 working. Identification cons: the Robert Beattie who married Elsie Murray was identified as a Blacksmith on his sons' death registration, and that would be a departure for the family. Other notes: Robert was "of Ordiquhill" at the time of his marriage. The three children listed below have been identified from census and death records; none of their births were recorded in the Fordyce OPR, so it is possible that they had other children, not listed below. William John Patterson was the School Teacher at SS No 4 in Nichol (which was on the farm of William Beattie, Jemima's uncle, and adjacent to that of the George Beattie family) from January 1880-December 1881. He went on to graduate from Queen's University in 1888, with post-graduate work at Clark University, Worcester, Mass. He enlisted in the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force in 1914. He had previously served as Chaplin for 18th Mounted Rifles for 7 yrs. Geneva Ann Martin died in 1915 on the Lusitania. Also on the voyage, but surviving, was the couple's son Allan Martin Beattie. Sarah Ann Elliott was born Oct 25, 1868 and died Nov 18, 1937. She is buried at Belsyde Cemetery

There are Beatties at Tarntoul from at least the 1720s. Recorded Beattie births there end about 1796. At least two of the Beattie brothers moved to Cabrach, where there are recorded births starting around 1816. By the 1841 census, the Farquharson family has replaced Beatties at Tarntoul.

		Upperton	James Beattie - of Upperton, Kildrummy, and Nichol (Wellington Co, Ontario) CHR - Glenbucket, Feb 6th 1827 - "William Beattie in Upperton & Isobel Gordon his wife had a son baptized & named JAMES before witnesses" M - Catherine Griach 1850, Wester Mains, Kildrummy [per birth registration of son Charles; marriage not found in IGI] D - prob 12 Oct 1903. Buried in Manitoba, per family stone in Belsyde Cemetery, Fergus James Beattie and wife Catherine appear in the 1861 Kildrummy census at Westermains. James is listed as a farmer, age 36, born Glenbucket. Catherine is listed as farmer's wife, age 38. In 1881, this family appears in Nichol, Wellington Co, Ontario. The parents' ages are slightly off--James is listed as farmer, age 53, and Catherine as age 56. However the children who appear with them do match the names and ages. The family emigrated some time after 1869, when the last child Isabella was born in Kildrummy. According to Nichol County Historian David Beattie, James Beattie (known as "Scotch" Beattie) resided on Concession 7, of Nichol east of Ennotville Village. He and James Elmslie Jr. rented the Scott family farm starting in 1871. The Scott family returned to the Nichol farm about 1885, after which it was managed by the two eldest sons. Other Glenbucket Beatties had emigrated to Nichol in the 1830s (see Netherton (3) Table). There is no obvious close relation between those Beatties and this James, but perhaps vague cousinship or the appeal someone else from the old neighborhood accounts for this James joining those families a generation or so later.

Robert died 25 Oct 1922 of pneumonia n Fergus, and is buried in Belsyde Cemetery. from "Pillars and Patches Along the Pathway: A History of Nichol Township" by David Beattie: Robert Scott the third referred to as "Montana Bob", took over his father's farm, and married Ellen Beattie, a daughter of James "Scotch" Beattie. Their family was composed of Robert (Young Montana), Helen, Amelia, Beattie, Frank, Stanley and John McKay Scott. The four eldest sons of this family settled in Western Canada and the daughters trained as nurses at Albany, New York State, where their youngest brother, J.M. Scott also resided.

		3	So who is this William Beattie of Upperton? The following entry would appear to settle the question: "Glenbuchat U/P MI - Draft Nov 2000 53. In mem. Anne Murison who d. April 1792 a. 52 yrs. And her husband James Beattie who d. 12th Dec. 1812 a. 56 and also their son W. Beattie farmer in Upperton who d. 12th April 1847 a. 60 and of his family Cha who d. in infancy and John a. 10 and Isabella Gordon widow of above William Beattie who d. Dec. 17th 1849 a. 58." Previous arguments on pros/cons of identification included the following: 1. William Beattie - 10 Aug 1788 John Bettie in Netherton & Elspet Findlay his spouse had a son Baptized called WILLIAM before witnesses William Bettie in Ballachduie & John Bettie Junior in Netherton Pros: William of Upperton named his first son William. William of Upperton appears as a witness at the christenings of several of the children of James Beattie (son of John Beattie in Netherton & Elspet Findlay). Cons: Birth date outside the 1781-1786 range taken from the 1841 census. 2. William Beattie - 28 APR 1782 James Bettie in Belnaglack & Anna Murrain his spouse has a son baptised called WILLIAM before witnesses. [old: … witnesses William & Adam Bettie his brothers. Pros: Birth date fits within the 1781-1786 range taken from the 1841 census. Cons: This William's brother John lists a "William Beattie in Brachlach" as a witness at the 1827 birth of one of his daughters. Upperton William Beattie is having children at Upperton from 1814-1834 - including entries in 1825, 1827, and 1829, which would make it seem extremely unlikely that he had pulled up stakes and moved to Brachlach for a while in 1827.

Mary McRobert is in the household of grandparents at Smithyford for 1861 & 1871 census. 2) James McHardy or Ross was born 6 Oct 1858 in Glenbucket to "Betsy or Elizabeth Shaw." 3) Harry Ross was born 17 Nov 1864 in Knowhead Strathdon to "Elizabeth Ross or Shaw." In 1891 he appears in household of his uncle James Ross listed as "Formerly Police Constable." Duncan Shaw was born about 1826 in Tomintoul, Banffshire. He died in 1854.

	James Downie & Helen Beattie M - 8 Aug 1847 Strathdon "James Downie Auchernach & Helen Beattie servant Rhinnavoan were this day regularly proclaimed for the first, second, and third time and married in presence of the kirk session by the Revd Robert Meiklejohn, Strathdon." Note - this family appears to have been only coincidentally connected to Glenbucket. According to the 1851 census, James Downie was born in Strathdon abt 1826, and Helen Beattie was born in Banffshire abt 1825. The couple moved around, having a total of seven children. These were born, variously, in Glenbucket (James 1847), Inverurie (Helen 1850), Kintore (Francis 1853, Robert 1855, James 1857) and Alyth, Perth (Elizabeth 1860, Isabella 1861).
