Watching taiko drumming and photographing the event is darn hard work. It's
hard work NOT to move with its driving beat.
But nothing is harder than
being a drummer.
Not only must drummers keep a
beat, dance, sprint, maintain
their kata (proper stance), stay synchronized,
call out their kakegoe (vocalizations), and
continue to lift spirits. All this without a pained
look on their faces or crashing into a fellow drummer.
Or dropping their bachis (drumsticks).

Bachi is a
variant form of batsu, meaning punishment. For those of us
