These hamsters are rarely found in pet shops because they are difficult to breed and because of their mouse-like appearence. The Chinese hamster has a slender body and a fairly long tail compared to other species of hamster. They can have spotted or plain short coats. An adult Chinese hamster can be from 10-12 cm (4-5 in). These hamsters are sociable and should be bought in pairs. They should preferably be housed in a large aquarium, as many individuals have been known to squeeze throught the bars of wire cages. The Chinese hamster is nocturnal and very timid, however, they can be active for short periods during the day. They are excellent climbers and are very fast. Because of their speed, they are often difficult to catch, but can be handled quite easily once they are caught. They also are known for nipping occasionally. The Chinese hamster makes a great pet for the experienced hamster owner but is not recommended for beginners due to their speed and small size. |
