Coat Types of the Syrian Hamster
Today, the Syrian hamster can be found with several different coat types.  These are:

Short-Haired
This is the most common coat type found in pet stores.  The coat is short and dense all over.  It is the original coat type of the wild Syrian hamster.  All colour variations can be produced in short-haired Syrians.

Long-Haired This variety is often referred to as a Teddy-Bear hamster or an Angora hamster.  They have longer fur than short-haired hamsters.  The female's fur is usually only slightly longer than than the short-haired variety with longer tufts around her tail.  Long-haired males have more obviously long coats, with even longer tufts around his lower body.

Satin This type of coat gives the hamster's fur a shiny appearance, and makes the hamster's coat look darker than normal.  Two Satin hamsters should not be mated together as this results in offspring with extra shiny but very thin coats.

Rex  A hamster with a Rex coat has a wavy coat and lifted hairs, giving it a scruffy appearance.  A short-haired Rex has a velvet feel to its coat.

Hairless  This variety is indeed hairless, although they may have curly whiskers.
