If your hamster does happen to escape from its cage, usually during the night, there are a number of dangers it is facing: getting stepped on or crushed by someone, being eaten by a pet, electrocution, falling down stairs or off a table or getting stuck in insulation. There are also an amount of damage it can cause during its run of the house: holes in the wall, damaged goods, chewed up carpet, urine, and excretions. This being said, as soon as you find out your hamster has escaped, take immediate steps to find it! Check in obvious places around the house (and double check the cage!). If you still can't find it, set up a trap to catch it. Here is an easy and effective method: 1. Find a deep bucket. Place it in a quiet section of your house. 2. Fold a soft towel and place it in the bottom of the bucket. Make sure that your hamster won't be able to climb or jump out of the bucket. 3. Create a staircase from a pile of books, leading up to the bucket. 4. Put some of your hamster's favourite food in the bucket, preferably some strong smelling vegetables. Put tiny pieces of the vegetable on the ‘staircase' to give your hungry hamster a taste of what's to come, and to lure it into the bucket. 5. Wait overnight. In the morning, check the bucket; chances are, you'll find your hamster curled up inside. If not, check the cage to see if your hamster has returned! **If your hamster still isn't found, replace the food in the bucket every night and repeat step 5. Until your hamster is found, take steps to ensure it will not get hurt: tell your family members that your hamster has escaped, and to watch where they step or sit down; try to keep other pets away from the area you think your hamster is most likely to be; keep a watchful eye and a hopeful heart! |
