The amount of Roborovski Dwarf hamsters seen in pet shops is continually on the rise.

The Roborovski Dwarf hamster has a short, grayish-orange or sandy coloured coat and a white belly.  Its most distinctive and appealing feature is its white 'eyebrows': patches of white fur just above each eye.

These lively hamsters are very active but despite their vigorous nature, they seldom bite.  Because they are so energetic, they must be housed in large cages relative to their size: a 24" x 12" aquarium is ideal.  The Roborovski Dwarf hamster should be bought in pairs and
must be housed in an glass or plastic aquarium, as they are small enough to squeeze through the bars of wire cages: an adult Roborovski Dwarf Hamster hamster grows only to be from 4-5 cm (1.5-2 in), making it the smallest breed of hamster kept as a pet.

The Roborovski Dwarf hamster is nocturnal but can be suprisingly active for short periods during the day.  Its extremely small size makes it very difficult to handle, and therefore is not an ideal first hamster.  The Roborovski Dwarf hamster is rather timid but is fascinating to watch.  However, it is not recommended for hamster owners who like to be able to hold their pet due to its small size.
