Syrian Hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) |
The Syrian hamster is more commonly known as the Golden hamster because of its golden colouring, although now they are bred to be a variety of colours. Long-haired Syrian hamsters are often referred to as "Teddy bear" or "Angora" hamsters. Syrian hamsters grow to approximately 15-20 cm (6-8 in). They are fully grown at about 4 months. These hamsters have very short, hairless tails, stubby legs and expandable cheek pouches. Its pouches are used for collecting food and bedding; the weight of the food in a hamster's cheek pouches can sometimes amount to more than half the hamster's weight The Syrian Hamster is the most common type of hamster found at pet stores and, consequentially, it is the most common hamster kept as a pet. This breed of hamster is solitary, meaning that in the wild it lives alone. If they are housed together two Syrian hamsters can often fight to the death. Although these hamsters are nocturnal, they make great pets and have a wonderful temperament. |
