Wooden homes take a bit more skill to make, but allow lots of room for creativity. Below are instructions on how to make a simple wooden house, but this idea can be expanded to make many other varieties. For example, a slanted roof with footholds can double as a ramp to reach a high platform. For cleaning purposes, it is best not to build a floor to the house, unless the roof or a wall is removable or hinged. The interior of this wooden house will be 10 cm (4 in) x 14.5 cm (5.8 in). Materials: - wood - #1 Approx. 55 cm (22.7 in) in length and 9 cm (3.6 in) in width; 1 cm (1/2 in) thick; #1 will be used as the walls. #2 Length: 17.5 cm (7 in); fairly thin; width: 12.5 cm (5 in); #2 will be used as the roof. - hammer - saw - drill with drill bits that make approx. 2.5 cm (1 in) and 6 cm (2.5 in) <-- keyhole drill bits are ideal - 12 thin nails - sandpaper Procedure: 1. Cut and sand two 12.5 cm (5 in) pieces from wood #1. 2. Cut and sand two 14.5 cm (5.8 in) pieces from wood #1. 3. In one of the 12.5 cm (5 in) pieces, drill a 6 cm (2.5 in) hole. 4. Drill one or two windows in the 14.5 cm (5.8 in) pieces using the 2.5 cm (1 in) drill bit. Keep in mind that they will provide ventilation 5. Sand all holes. 6. Align and nail pieces together as seen below. Make sure that the tip of the nail doesn't protrude through the wood, as this is dangerous for your hamster. |
7. Shorten the length of wood #2 with the saw so that it fits neatly on top of the walls. From the top you should only be able to see wood #2. 8. Nail down the roof by putting one nail into each corner. Again, make sure that the tip of the nail doesn't protrude through the wood. Your wooden house is finished. |
