She gives a fabulous course called "Make Learning Fun" Breathe Life into Learning.... Here are some tips: Dawn Elrad recommends the following questions What is Active Learning? AL engages the learner in the material being learned AL distributes the responsibility for learning among students and the teacher. The teacher selects the teaching style course level objectives and considers the experience of the students. What are the RISKS of using Active Teaching? -- Teachers give up the central role. -- Students change the expectations of the teacher -- resistance to change by students and teacher. RESEARCH TELLS US -- The lecture should be six minutes or LESS. -- stduents retain the information from the lecture BETTER when the new material was in small pieces. An engaging activity reinforces the material that was in the short lecture. How does the teacher make the lecture clear? -- give a preview -- make an analogy (make a connection to life) -- be organized! -- GIVE A PRE-ASSESSMENT (ask students to take a little test to see what they know already). -- The teacher GIVES a signal between steps and between pieces of information. -- USE EXAMPLES. - EMPHASIZE and STRESS Important points. - PAUSE for students to take notes. - Check for COMPREHENSION - ASK questions to the students... - Eliminate unimportant information. - REVIEW frequently. Good Mentor Award for Teachers Good Mentor Award Awarded by www.TeachersToTeachers.com and presented by a reader of this web site. This award is nominated by teachers and selected by teachers. This is a “do-it-yourself” way of letting another teacher know that they are special. It’s called the “Good Mentor Award” and it is awarded by anecdote. You are given permission to download the Good Mentor Teacher Award form and you can write in the name of the Good Mentor if you email a short anecdote explaining how... The nomination can be private and the presentation can be private. The Good Mentor can add the award to his or her resume and can declare themselves by sending an email to englishlesson@mail.com with backup anecdotes. We’ll put your photo up if you want it, but most Good Mentors have been reluctant to bring further attention, since their good practices sometimes run against the grain of their local school culture. Often the teacher may be unpopular with certain parts of the administration or with some fellow teachers, but might be a pioneer or “giraffe” (he or she might stick out his or her neck). By reading the anecdote, you will see why the nominator believes that the teacher deserves to be recognized. The TeachersToTeachers Good Mentor Award is created by teachers for teachers. Parents, administrators and students can nominate teachers, but the award grew out of a teacher’s desire to recognize one of his colleagues. Here’s an example “Good Mentor With String” Teaching math with household items. This teacher is recognized today for bringing common household items, such as straws, strings and cardboard tubes from paper towels, into the classroom. This teacher has more than 20 years of experience with students and focuses on teaching students who have not mastered geometry yet. One of his specialties is adapting the final exam to include a portfolio test: 50 of 100 points going toward the final exam are to be figures constructed out of string and straws. A student who can’t pass a written test (for whatever reason) can actually get a passing grade by getting 20 of 50 written points and 50 out of 50 points for constructing five figures according to class instructions. Seventy percent is a pass, so someone who can identify only 4 out of 10 questions on a written test can actually pass a class by demonstrating knowledge visually. This teacher deserves recognition especially since many guidance counselors at this teacher’s school appreciate the portfolio method of evaluating a student’s progress. For this teacher’s innovative teaching style, and willingness to share methods with new teachers, this Good Mentor Award is justly deserved. Awarded on May 2, 2003. GO TO GoodMentor |
