I am a teacher at a school in Hallandale. http://www.oocities.org/teachers2teachers/freelessons.html IF YOU ARE AN ESOL STUDENT, CLICK HERE IF YOU WANT TO TEACH ENGLISH ($20/hour) click HERE Most students work on their contracts and move ahead toward their goals while they are at school. They ask me, the sub, some questions and I help them. Some students prefer to draw. When I find something interesting, I suggest that they make a comic book or an illustrated children's sory to that we can getit published. Below are some photos. What story would you like to write about the motorcycle? Can you imagine a story? What will happen? Send your ideas to Mr. McCrey at talkinternational@yahoo.com. |
Drawings by Malchus Smith MORE ARTWORK Who will be the next artist to have their work on a web site? If you want to learn how to make a web site, contact englishlesson@mail.com or talkinternational@yahoo.com Click here to see the lesson: how to make a web site on oocities.com Thank you! Do you want to write a story and then ask Mr. Smith to illustrate it? I hope you will write a story and we'll find artists to make pictures. QUESTIONS 1. "Why do students put their artwork on your web site? Are you paying them?" ANSWER: No. I like the art work that I select. I hope that some of my friends, who work in marketing and ad agencies, find your work interesting and maybe someone will want to make a cover of a book ... and hire you to create the drawing. 2. "What do you mean about a children's book?" ANSWER: I have dozens of ideas for children's books. I like to tell stories to my nieces and nephews. I'm looking for students who can illustrate my stories. I think that some students at Hallandale will want to write their own stories and ask a friend to illustrate the stories. I can show you how to create a story on the internet. Are you interested? I try to sub at Hallandale every day. I respect the teachers, I like many of the students, I like to eat next to the fountain in front of the main office. I hope to work full-time some day at an adult center/School of choice like Hallandale. Mr. McCrey's Rules 1. I like a quiet classroom. Many students need a quiet classroom to work on their contracts. 2. If you need to talk to complete your contract, please keep your voice down and whisper (or ask the teacher for permission to go outside the classroom and talk there for a short time...then get back to work). Some people work better when they work in a group. That's okay. tThere are eight characteristics to personality: extrovert/introvert, sensing, judging, perceiving, thinking, and using intuition. I'm sure you know the best way for you to work on a contract. Don't bother other people, get the work done, or ask me if you want a new challenge or something interesting to do to learn. You can start by looking at www.knowyourtype.com .... 3. If you want help with your homework, contact me. If you want to go to the restroom, usually I am very easy with the bathroom pass. I usually use the system that Ms. Sullivan uses (put your name on the bathroom pass form and return the pass when you are finished). Ms. Podolan and Ms. Edwards use a similar system. 4. I am here because I learned how to do many things. I had excellent teachers. My parents paid a lot of money to get me a good schooling. I'm ready to share that information with you. Please use me -- I don't know how long I will be working at Hallandale. I am looking for a contract and I might take a contact at Whiddon Rogers. In the short time that I have with you (the last day of the school year is in June), I want to give you my full attention. I hope you will respect other students. 5. If you just want to sit and postpone your work, that is your choice. 6. If you want to do something useful, ask me to give you a worksheet. Some of the topics are: How to be a volunteer greeter at the Airport. How to give directions with a map. Solving "REAL WORLD" math (how many gallons of water in the fountain outside the main office?" Write a letter to say thank you. Write a formal letter to make a request. Write a business letter. Can you touch-type... each finger has at least 3 keys that it is made to hit. I can type 50 words per minute, which is one way I make money (data processing). I can show you how to type without looking at the keyboard. Do you have an email account? Yahoo, hotmail? I can show you how. LEFT FINGERS RIGHT FINGERS 4 3 2 1 1 2 3 4 Q W E RT YU I O P A S D FG HJ K L ; Z X C VB NM , . ? YOUR THUMB (usually the right thumb) hits the SPACE BAR SHIFT KEYS are held with the opposite little finger. If you don't have a computer in your home, you can use one at the library. Or you can use one at the Media Center of the Hallandale School. Ask me and I will help you find a computer that you can use. ARE YOU READY FOR COLLEGE? I can give you a list of words to study so you can read text books more easily. 7. I have visited over 30 countries. If you have questions about the world, ask me. I would like to share my discoveries with you. See my tours on www.virtourist.com (key west, Costa Rica) 8. If you are honest with me, I will be honest with you. Sometimes I forget to brush my teeth after breakfast or after lunch. Tell me and I'll use a breathmint. If you want to get some work done for another class and you need time to get a book or you need to write a letter, tell me. Be straight with me and I'll be straight with you. 9. I know the number for Security (X 2000). My friends are Mr. Wright, Ms. Burns and Mr. Davis. I respect them. If a student continues to disturb the class, I will call for security. 10. The taxpayers of Broward County pay my salary. They want you to get a good education. I can give you some of that education if you tell me what you want to learn or if you ask me "Mr. McCrey, what can you tell me that will help me in the future?" Click HERE for exercises If you have questions, call my cell between 4-9 p.m. 954 646 8246 If you want to help grow interesting plants, which can attract butterflies, write to me or call me. I have some cuttings that you can plant and care for. 11. I don't believe in stupid classwork. I remember doing math problems in school and I was bored. I can help you find "fun in math" and "learn to have a conversation with math." Math tells a story. A map tells a story. If you are bored, ask me to show you why the homework is interesting, or let's find a better task for you to be working on. 12. I want you to succeed. How can I help you to help yourself? 13. Ask me about "what did you do before you became a teacher?" See my resume. 14. Do you want to create a book with me? Do you want to create a book with a friend? I'll show you how you can create the book on a web site or if you want to make a physical book, you can do it with a photocopier and make 20 or 30 copies. I have made more than 10 types of books. Ask me about them. ZEV book Visit Portable 5 <<<<<(level 2)<<<< Mr. McCrea is writing a book about teaching. He wants to encourage other adults to move to Florida to teach. Exercises for Mature Students Are You Ready for Society? Exercises for Homeowners Are You Ready for Work? Exercises for the office and the workplace One of my students asked me, "Why are you teaching at Hallandale? You're a good teacher. You should be teaching in a high school!" My reply is: 1. I have been lucky to have fantastic teachers. I just repeat the lessons that I learned from them and that's why you think I'm a good teacher. 2. I like the system at Hallandale. The students have contracts and they move ahead at their own speeds. 3. I like the music in the morning near the fountain. I like the fountain. I like the food. 4. I like the security guards: Mr. Davis, Mr. Wright, Ms. Burns 5. I like the interesting students. Even if the student doesn't want to do his or her homework or contract, there's usually an interesting story that they can tell. I have seen great drawings and poems, and I encourage my students to write plays and screenplays to prepare for making a student film. I can learn from students. You can learn from teachers. It's a great place to visit. I hope you learn to appreciate the good opportunity you have here at HACC. 6. I like the media center. You can get online and get an email account (the easiest place to start is www.hotmail.com). 7. I like the mix of the students. The lunch time for the ESOL students and adult students (GED) is around 11 am. The lunch time for School of Choice students starts at 10:45 a.m. So there is an overlap between 11-11:20 for ESOL students to sit with School of Choice students and we can all practice speaking English together. Here is a little bit of homework for School of Choice students: Some of you don't know how to speak another language. You can invite ESOL students to spend lunch time with you. You can learn some phrases: It's nice to see you. Me gusta verle. Il me donne grand plaisir de vous voir. How are you? Como esta Usted? "Common alley vou?" (comment allez vous?) It is hot today. Hace calor hoy. Il fay show ojourdui. (Il fait chaud aujourd'hui) OKAY? Students at HACC have access to interesting people from South American and Europe....Let's exchange information. The ESOL people are here to learn about US culture...and HACC students know a lot about the USA. We can start "Lunchtime English Speaking Society" (LESS, because Less is More!) 8. Another reason for liking HACC is the attitude of the administration. I enjoy watching the assistant principal and the guidance counselor standing at the front of the school. "They must really care about the school," said my wife when I told her that adults stand in front of the school in the morning. 9. I also like the coordinator of substitute teachers. Ms. Y greets me each morning with a smile and she puts me into classes where the students need some special attention. I have enjoyed showing students in Portable 9C how to calculate the area of Broward County. In Portable 5 (Lalita's class) we did ESOL exercises and we learned abou the midnight ride of Paul Revere. In the School of Choice (Ms. Singleton's class, room 135) we learned many scientific principles CLICK HERE to see some of the subjects. News Issue number 2 With Ms. Sullivan's class (room 132?), we practiced getting an email address and then we learned to teach the 13 vowel sounds of English (A E I O U and cat, pet, bit, shop-hot-top, cut-up, plus house, dog-law-walk, and foot-would-good-book) In GED we used Latia's method to answer these math problems: 1. If I buy a TV for $422 and the original price is $500, what percent did I save? Latia's method goes like this: | PART | PERCENT | ---------------------|------------------------ WHOLE | 100 (ORIGINAL) | 2. If I take 4 hours to drive to Orlando (200 miles), what is my average speed? 3. If my wife drives at 80 mph, how many hours will it take her to drive to Orlando? 4. If the total cost of 45 buttons is $1.35, what is the price per button? Can you do these problems? The answers are below... ANSWERS 1. If I buy a TV for $422 and the original price is $500, what percent did I save? | PART | PERCENT | ---------------------|------------------------ WHOLE | 100 (ORIGINAL) | | PART 78 | PERCENT | ---------------------|------------------------ WHOLE 500 | 100 (ORIGINAL) | The part is 500 - 428 = $78 (the part you saved) CROSS MULTIPLY: 78 x 100, then divide by 500 7800 --------- OR ________________ cross the zeros 78/5 = 15.6% 500 500 ) 7800 2. If I take 4 hours to drive to Orlando (200 miles), what is my average speed? Let's make a conversation together. McCrey: "I went to Orlando yesterday." You: "How long did it take?" McC: "Four hours." You: "How far is it?" McC: "200 miles." You: So, you went 200 miles in 4 hours. So in one hour you went.... 200 divide by 4.....50 miles in one hour, 100 miles in 2 hours, 150 miles in 3 hours and 200 miles in 4 hours." 3. If my wife drives at 80 mph, how many hours will it take her to drive to Orlando? In the first hour, she goes 80 miles. In the second hour she goes another 80 miles: 80 + 80 = 160 In the third hour she goes another 80 miles: 240 miles. So 3 hours is too far. There are 40 iles left. (200-160 = 40 miles). How long will it take my wife to go 40 miles? let;s see, in a half hour, she can go 40 miles, since she goes 80 miles in an hour. The answer: 2.5 hours. 4. If the total cost of 45 buttons is $1.35, what is the price per button? TOTAL cost = number of things x price per one thing $1.35 = 45 x price per one thing 135 cents 5 x 9 x 3 cents 5 x 9 x 3 cents ------ = price per one thing = ---------------------- = --------- 45 5 x 9 5 x 9 cross out the five and nine above and below From one of my students in Portable 2 "Nobody is stupid (except if there is a problem with the brain) so each of us has the potential for doing useful and helpful things. We just need to open the right part of our brain and then we can do anything we decide to do." -- one of my students wrote something like this. BRAVO! for the nice thought. I agree. If you want to do something, just ask me and we'll try to build a plan for it. Go to my ESOL WEB PAGE for English students.... "Why do people from Europe, South America and Asia talk English with a strange accent? When they say CAT, it sounds like CAUGHT or COT. When they say FOLD it sounds like FAULT. When they say FOUND, they sound like FOUNT. When they say SHEET of paper, it sounds like something else! A student from Saudi Arabia said, "I went to the PEACH yesterday." He meant BEACH. Do you have a personal philosophy that you want to share with other people? Do you want to learn about the philosophies of other people? Here is a project by Mr. Lawlor... Dear Colleague, I am writing to ask your help for a book I am writing about Life Practices. I am looking for examples of those simple things that we all do that are essential to expressing and maintaining our values as we face life's ups and downs - our Life Practices. What I am seeking is a bit like folklore. Something with a story and an easy to remember slogan or catchphrase. I am asking you to contribute out of your own personal experience not as an official representative of an organization. I am especially interested in those practices which help you deal with others - in your family, at work, in your immediate community, in the larger global community, etc. So far I have gathered over 150 practices from people all over the world: These are examples of contributions I have received so far that may help clarify what I am looking for: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- " 'Water what you want to grow' is my motto. Whenever I see something being done well I acknowledge it as soon as possible and in some tangible way. The least that I do is to complement the person doing the thing well. What I try to do more often is write a note to the person or give them a small gift." "My life changed when I went from seeing mistakes as awful to seeing them as the first chapter of a textbook on a new subject. I even had this made into a sign that hangs on the wall in my office. 'Mistakes are just chapter one in a textbook on a new subject' Now I get bothered if I don't have some sort of royal screw-up every few days. It's like I am not trying." "I learned from my grandfather to 'use the best materials you can afford.' This has provided a model for my life's work. Even in my late 70's I am still actively building things and more to the point of your book, I am still building my life out of "the best materials I can afford." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- These practices come from people from many places and with a wide variety of backgrounds. I am grateful for that. I want to show the broadest possible view of Life Practices from around the globe. And, at a time when there is so much mistrust in the world, I hope my book does some small part in reminding us that we even though we have differences, we still have much to learn from one another. I will be grateful if you would send me a practice that you use as a foundation in your life. Please include some brief biographical information as well. Also, if you would like to share in what I am learning, please let me know as well. And please let me know if you have any additional questions. Thank you for your consideration. I was a substitute teacher for 6 months and on Sept 11, 2003, Ms. Doody hired me as an every-day teacher of ESOL. I have noticed thefollowing behaviors around me. a) some students touch female students even though the women show displeasure. Gentlemen: in the "real world" you can be fired or the other employee can sue you. School is practice for the real world. b) some students open a packet of cards, use them, then place the cards on the table. c) some students walk past trash without looking at it. Soem students put trash on the ground. d) some students don't read a newspaper every day. ("READ" does not mean "look at every page." READ = scan, to get the idea about what happened in the past 24 hours.) You are what you accept. You are what you protect. You are what you defend. If you accept order and "everything is in its place" and if you accept beauty and if you protect other students from being hurt, you create that kind of world around you. If you smile when someone bothers another student, then you also bother the student. If you bring a smile on your face and a positive attitude, you make a teacher's life brighter. You make the whole school brighter with your positive attitude. People are beautiful when they smile. Do you have the courage to speak your mind? Do you really want your teacher to lose his voice? You don't have to speak to speak your mind. You can quietly move away. You can make a difference in your world. Write to me with your opinion. SH edges289@yahoo.com atlanta3059@yahoo.com |
