McCrea This teacher wants to remain anonymous, but I want to recognize him for his good works. Category: Teaching math with household items. This teacher is recognized today for bringing common household items, such as straws, strings and cardboard tubes from paper towels, into the classroom. This teacher has more than 20 years of experience with students and focuses on teaching students who have not mastered geometry yet. One of this teacher's specialties is adapting the final exam to include a portfolio test: 50 of 100 points going toward the final exam are to be figures constructed out of string and straws. A student who can’t pass a written test (for whatever reason) can actually get a passing grade by getting 20 of 50 written points and 50 out of 50 points for constructing five figures according to class instructions. Seventy percent is a pass, so someone who can identify only 4 out of 10 questions on a written test can actually pass a class by demonstrating knowledge visually. This teacher deserves recognition especially since many guidance counselors at this teacher’s school appreciate the portfolio method of evaluating a student’s progress. For this teacher’s innovative teaching style, and willingness to share methods with new teachers, this Good Mentor Award is justly deserved. Awarded on May 2, 2003. April 2003 / "Ms. Paperwork" / Nominated by S. McCrea Ms. Paperwork knows the codes to get into the system and makes the chore of analysis and feedback a lot less burdensome. We talk about life, students and resolve world problems...and suddenly it's time to go home and the paper work is DONE! Thank you, Ms. P! April 2003 / "Ms. Cheerio" / Nominated by S. McCrea Ms. Cheerio has a smile every day and a lightness. I found out her secret: She listens to inspirational cassettes on the way to work and the bubbly feeling inside spills over onto people around her. The sunshine she spreads reflects back and nourishes her all day -- thanks for the positive attitude! Description of the Award... |
