Mr. McCrea's SAT Page (I'm a tutor) I'm Steve McCrea and I'll show you how to get a higher score on your SAT. Actually, many tutors say the same thing. Here are their web pages: STEP 1: Study the Gulotta book >>>>> STEP 2: Study these 5000 words http://www.freevocabulary.com/ STEP 3: Take the FREE Princeton Review test and online course www.princetonreview.com STEP 4: visit the collegeboard.org web site. http://www.collegeboard.org/sat/html/students/prep002.html Excuses: Mr. McCrea, I didn't have time to study 10 new words. Mr. McCrea, I didn't have time to check off the words that I know from the list of 5000 words. Mr. McCrea, I didn't have time to complete one entire SAT test this week. Mr. McCrea, I couldn't find an SAT test to work on. Mr. McCrea, I lost my list of words. I've heard all of the excuses. I don't want to hear them from you. There is no excuse for not studying for the SAT except "I didn't want to." Be honest with yourself and your SAT teachers. "I have only 2 weeks before the test!" MY ANSWER: get started... Math tips: Get This BOOK: http://www.mostlybrightideas.com/100sat.html…. http://apps.collegeboard.com/satprep/index.jsp Consider buying the test prep materials from the College Board How many hours? 5000 words x 1 minute per word/ 60 min/hr = 85 hours Math = 100 tips x 5 minutes/tip = 500 minutes or about 10 hours 10 complete tests x 4 hours = 40 hours Post Test Study (at least 2 hours/practice exam) = 20 hours TOTAL: You need to budget 155 hours! Your Homework: read every word 4 times and put the words into sentences that you understand… EXAMPLE: Make sentences with these words: apt It is an apt choice... It is a good choice. I know a guy whose name is Carpenter and he works with wood. That is an apt name for him. gregarious The sheep are very gregarious with each other... I know a guy named Gregory who is very friendly Now look for the word in the list on http://www.freevocabulary.com/ - Cover the definition of the word. - Imagine a sentence that uses the difficult word. MAKE THE SENTENCE INTERESTING or UNUSUAL. - Try to explain the words into your own words. - Look at the definition. - Mark the word if you know it. Don’t mark the word if you don’t know it. Eventually you will get every word familiar in your head. It takes four months with 5000 words. Carry your list everywhere with you. Good luck! ADVICE FOR PARENTS WHO WANT TO SAVE MONEY How many psychologists does it take to change a lightbulb? YOU can become a tutor for the SAT. Part of your job is to be a coach. Just follow the suggestions below and your child can gain a lot. The key is to persuade the student to complete at least one SAT test each week. |
TO Parents and Students who want to become their own tutors (and push themselves) As an SAT tutor, you have two main concerns: 1. get the student enough material to learn on her own 2. check on the student's progress. How many psychologists does it take to change a lightbulb? ANSWER: ZERO psychologists. The light bulb has to want to change itself. Same thing for students. Yes, it's possible to force a student to take a review course for SAT, but it's like boot camp in the army. Everyone proceeds through the same material. It's possible to require the student to work with a tutor for an hour every day --- but if the student doesn't want to work, then it's a tough hour for both the student and the tutor. The ideal situation as a tutor is to give the student direction... then step back. The student has to want to do the work. Like the light bulb, the student has to want to change herself...into a self-starter. I can't promise a gain of 200 points up in verbal in 3 weeks, but I can point the way ... My usual fee is $35 per hour 4 weeks, one hour x 4 meetings per week = 16 meetings at $35 per hour = $560 That's possible. (EXPENSIVE, 16 meetings with Steve = $560) However, I propose that I meet twice the first week and then once a week after that. For 4 weeks, that is 5 meetings x $35 = $175. The "tutor" (you) can take over from me and save almost $400 over 4 weeks. The student needs to do the following: 1. go to www.oocities.org/talkinternational/sat.html (this web site) 2. visit the www.freevocabulary.com web site adn download the first 5 pages (about 200 words). 3. She should mark the words that she knows perfectly. 4. She should read and memorize and make sentences with the unmarked words. On our first tutor meeting, I will ask her to show me 10 sentences, written, using words she doesn't know. She should give me synonyms and opposites (where appropriate) and related words (e.g. if the word is capillary, then vein, artery, tube are related words) 5. She should visit www.review.com and click on SAT and then click on FREE ONLINE COURSE. she'll need to enroll (give a name and email address) and then she can visit the free course, which includes an online test. TEST-TAKING HINTS If you take the paper test: Skip the problems you don't know. Do the easy ones first. Push to finish the test then return to do the hard ones. With math problems, always write your problem solving steps on paper. it's easier to check yourself if you have each step on paper. If you narrow the choices down to two answers, guess. if you narrow the choices down to three answers, don't guess. if you take the computer test -- skip a question ONLY if you think you can't guess. You can't go back to the question if you skip it. If your student studies the above information before our first meeting, we can move more quickly to move ahead. I will not bring an SAT book -- the student is expected to own a book that she can mark and live with. (Not a friend's book, it's okay to mark the book) Steve McCrea 2314 Desoto Drive Fort Lauderdale FL 33301 954 463 0310 cell 954 646 8246 Go to High School Hub and get plenty of homework help. |

(Dedicated to Luia Forbes) Do you want to study more than just "SAT"? Do you want to prepare for college? COLLEGE PREP "Don't spend all your time trying to work your way out of trouble. Do it right the first time." Tom Brokaw ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Dear Parent / Dear Student Here are some tips for getting the most out of the SAT (on one page, so it’s cramped). If you have 10 weeks or less before the SAT Ignore the advice at the bottom of the page. Follow the directions of your teacher. Do at least three complete tests. Go for speed. If you can’t complete a question in less than 1 minute, skip it. You will build up time to tackle problems that you skip. write important information on the test booklet. When you skip a problem, you can return and your mental work will be on the paper. SKIP SKIP SKIP. There are usually at least two parts of any section of the SAT – and the problems go from easy-medium-hard-very difficult-easy-medium-hard-very difficult. Skip the Hard and Very Difficult. Go back and use the techniques to get the answer: “try C” and “Plug in” and “-0.5, 1 million, 3, 1/1000000” and “eliminate” Each problem is worth the same number of points. Get the easy points first. You will get a higher score if you follow the techniques. If you have 10 or fewer weeks to complete your study, you can still use the advice at the bottom of the page for general vocab-building. You’ll need it in college. SPECIFIC ADVICE ON VERBAL Verbal is Vocabulary. Some experts suggest that 80% of the problems on the Verbal section come from lack of vocabulary. If you have 10 or fewer weeks to prepare for the SAT, focus on the “HIT PARADE” that most books provide. See your teacher if you can’t find a hit parade. Carry the list with you everywhere. Give a copy of some words to adults and ask them to use the words in sentences. Make the words REAL. Ask for their definitions. You can’t cross the word off your list until you can put it in a sentence and give at least one synonym. Other tips Drink plenty of water. Get plenty of sleep. Performance on exams drops when you don’t have enough sleep. You will perform better if you get enough sleep. You know how much “enough” is. Don’t study the techniques or vocabulary 48 hours before the exam. Smile. Even a fake smile puts muscles in positions that send “happy chemicals” through the brain. Just put your muscles in a smile position. Sit up straight. Your organs position themselves better and function better when you have good posture. Your writing elbow should contact the table. Position yourself so you don’t have to suspend your elbow in the air when you write. Breathe deeply at least once every 10 minutes. Fill your lungs and exhale completely. This activity will improve your concentration. Stretch your arms. Improved circulation helps. Advice at the bottom of the page Visit www.freevocabulary.com Print one page each week. Cover the definitions of the words and try to define and use the words in sentences. Cross off the words you know. After the first week, get the second page. Put the first week’s page in a binder. Visit that binder at least once a week. You might be able to identify the words after the 5th reading. When a page is absolutely crossed out, put it in the back of the binder. In 6 months, visit it again and see if you still know the words that you crossed out (when you cross the words, make it possible to still read them). Smile. Take a deep breath. www.teacherstoteachers.com Keep in touch: englishlesson@mail.com |
