RE: Adjunct Instructor for Business Administration or Political Science I’m applying for the position of adjunct instructor/substitute teacher and I feel I have the qualifications to support my candidacy. Education I earned a master’s degree in public administration (M.P.A.) from Florida Atlantic University (1990). The specialty was Environmental Growth Management. My bachelor’s degree in legal studies (a pre-law degree) was from Nova University (1987). I acquired a strong collection of teaching techniques from a certificate program in Teaching English to Adults (CELTA, a program under the auspices of Cambridge University). Professional Background I’ve been a partner in a company (TALK International School of Languages), an executive assistant, a purchase manager, and an event coordinator. I’ve handled public relations and advertising for a dozen clients as well as the publicity needs of my language school. My experience in government (Federal, regional and local) has given me a clear perspective on a wide range of issues that future business or public administrators will face. I can teach web page making using course materials that I developed for introducing oocities.com to people who are terrified or perplexed by the Internet. The method can also be used by HTML experts to quickly update a web page. I can show students how to use the basics of Photoshop, Word, Excel, Pagemaker, Quark, and other common programs to “get the job done.” Familiarity in a variety of programs can often serve business administrators better than specialization in a few software applications. I can also show students how to prepare for a public relations crisis, give them short cuts for great brochures and web sites, and give them tips for effective communications in the workplace. I believe I would be an effective teacher in a classroom or online with business administration or political science. I look forward to learning how I might serve your school and students. General Preparation I’m aware of the difficulties that many students have in handling the coursework and in bringing their skills up to a college level. I am interested in substituting and remedial tutoring for students. In my work as a tutor, students claim that they learned new skills quickly because I teach "differently." “If my teachers had taught the way you do, I wouldn’t need to be in this class.” -- student in a GED class “Mr. McCrea, you really know how to teach fractions.” -- student in a remedial FCAT class at Hallandale Adult Community Center |
