GAI Selva CAMU-CAMU Project

Camu-Camu is a tree indigenous to the Amazon. Once abundant, it has fallen victim to deforestation. It's fruit was recently identified as an exceptional source of Vitamin C, which has produced a growing demand for Camu-Camu that far outstrips supply.

GAI can plant ten hectares (25 acres) of Camu-Camu for under $1,000 U.S. At three years, 10 hectares produces over one ton of Camu-Camu. At seven years, it produces 100 tons; and, at 15 years, it produces 200-250 tons of Camu-Camu. Each 10 hectare plot can produce annual incomes of $60,000. In addition, other subsistence and cash crops can be grown in the reforested areas.
GAI Selva coordinates a local cooperative for processing Camu-Camu. GAI provides processing facilities and product manufacturing services on its 300 acre Camu-Camu reserve on the Itaya River.
