TeachersToTeachers.com Go ahead... Contact Steve McCrea and invite him to speak at your group... Learn more about the use of ebooks and mp3 files and CDs in homes and classrooms. ___ The Electronic Library: Steve describes Project Gutenberg and the philosophy of Michael Hart, the project's founder. The talk includes a discussion of the Gutenberg CD, which every participant will receive. FREE: 600 books on one CD ___ Famous Speeches on the Internet -- Bring Churchill, Roosevelt and Eisenhower to Life on your child's computer! It took 45 hours to find these famous speeches, including Churchill's inspiring "Finest Hour" talk. We've heard of FDR's fireside chats, but what did he say? This talk lets you practice using a CD with mpeg audio files. FREE: Each participant receives a FREE CD filled with mp3 files available on free web sites. The demo does not need computers, since a step-by-step visual presentation is included. All of these workshops and talks include a free CD for each member of the audience. The audience leaves with the feeling that they have a role to play in spreading the use of electronic books and podcasts to children. Each CD can be copied freely -- in fact, the Gutenberg Project aims to distribute 200 million ebooks each year through users of its free CD that holds 600 ebooks. |

The Challenge Letter for the "GET AHEAD" CD Dear MIDDLE SCHOOL Principal, I’m a former middle school teacher. I’d like to offer a free “enrichment talk” that I give to parents and grandparents. It’s called “Put Something Educational On That Ipod.” The talk is described in the enclosed sheet. The core message is that most teachers are so overwhelmed with covering the curriculum that it’s difficult to introduce something that is available – free — on the Internet. The “Get Ahead” CD (a text file of the book and videos are on the CD) is a gold mine for anyone who cares about kids – and that’s the upbeat message for everyone (from computer techie to someone who fears computers). The free CD that I give to every person in the audience is a gateway to new horizons for most children. If you are interested, let me know. I’m eager to share with anyone who wants to have a free CD with the “Get Ahead” booklet – plus there is the “List of Web Sites” for a no-school day. Steve McCrea, Tutor and former teacher Fort Lauderdale, FL mistermath@comcast.net 954 646 8246 I can also work with your teachers to create a specially crafted CD with ebooks and short videos made for your school. The CD could become a helpful addition to your school's yearbook, giving students and staff videos to review years from now. I’ve enclosed a response sheet for your convenience. S. McCrea Box 30555 Fort Lauderdale, FL 33303 954 646 8246 |
Challenge letter for the "600 Books on a CD" from Project Gutenberg Dear HIGH SCHOOL Principal, I’m a tutor of SAT Test Prep. I’d like to offer a free “pep talk” that I give to parents and grandparents. It’s called “Put Something Educational On That Ipod.” The core message is that most teachers are so overwhelmed with covering the curriculum that it’s difficult to introduce something that is available – free — on the Internet. The “On The Media” CD (with audio mp3 files and transcripts on the CD) is a gold mine for anyone who cares about kids – and that’s the upbeat message for anyone, computer techie to technophobe. The free CD that I give to every person in the audience is a gateway to new horizons for most children. If you are interested, let me know. I’m eager to talk with students and parents about the Gutenberg Project and the CD with 600 books. I’ve enclosed extra copies so that several teachers might have a chance to evaluate these CDs or come up with their own ideas for “cool stuff on a free CD.” You might consider making a CD with videos made by your teachers, which turns into a useful supplement to your school's yearbook. Steve McCrea, Tutor and former teacher Fort Lauderdale, FL mistermath@comcast.net 954 646 8246 I’ve enclosed a response sheet for your convenience. |
The Project Gutenberg CD – 600 books on one CD There is a potent library there… Shakespeare, Kipling, Dickenson, and other texts: Koran, Bible, Book of Mormon and Bhagavad Gita. How is that for balance? Here is the central message of the Gutenberg CD: This CD contains a set of electronic books, or eBooks, from Project Gutenberg. Project Gutenberg is one of the oldest all-electronic information providers on the Internet. Project Gutenberg is committed to producing freely available literature in multiple formats and languages and has more than 8000 titles available. The eBooks on the CD consist mainly of text and HTML files, with a few movie files. As for any reading material, Project Gutenberg recommends that children receive guidance from adults in determining what books are appropriate for them. You are encouraged to give away copies of this CD, and the eBooks on it. Read the license text in the eBooks for other uses. Consider giving someone you know a gift of great literature! |

What is on CD called "The speeches CD" Here is a list of speeches and interviews found on the internet Colonial Williamsburg Past and Present (CWPP) 26 files, including an interview with the person who pretends to be George Washington Winston Churchill, 8 clips, including "This was there finest hour" and Barbara Bush's Commencement Speech at Wellesley Nomination Speech by Barry Goldwater at the 1964 Convention 3 speeches by JFK Malcolm X (three mp3 files) Richard Nixon's resignation speech. 8 clips by FDR, including 4 fireside chats. There are more than 120 clips on this CD. ON THE MEDIA CD This CD has transcripts of the radio show The transcripts are grouped by month. The mp3 files are grouped to make it easy to transfer them to your iPod or to listen to them on your computer. 1. Scan the titles of the news stories in the HTML (web page) format. 2. When you find the date that you want, look up the mp3 file. If the transcript has the letter "a" at the end of the text file format, the story is at the beginning of the mp3 file. If the transcript has a letter near "e" or "f" (such as 09152006e), then the story is likely to be at the end of the mp3 file. 3. Search for difficult words in the transcript and pre-teach the meaning of the words. Ask students to ask their parents to think of a way to remember these words. 4. Listen to the file with your class or give students homework ("listen to the mp3 file with your parents"). --------------------- Information about the 600 books CD A selection of some books on the 600 list. Learn! Study!" but students do well when they can copy an adult. When was the last time you read a book, read an ebook on a computer screen or learned a phrase in a new language? Yes, the CDs are for students, but Learning Is For Families. LIFF Learning is a Family Affair! Many teachers give CDs to students and hope the books get seen... If the CDs are received by parents, then adult and child can work together. Some adults have misgivings about computers, so we have developed a workshop to address fear of technology. With Steve McCrea’s “Get Ahead List,” students are guided to web sites that stimulate imagination and encourage independent thinking. McCrea, a tutor for SAT test preparation, developed the list for middle school and high school students. “It’s a competitive world. Kids in Asia know a lot more about North America than our kids know about Asia. We can get ahead, but it means less entertainment and more edutainment.” “Plan ahead for no-school days,” McCrea added. “Download the web sites onto your home computer’s hard drive and the sites will be ready for your child to use.” “The list is great for keeping the learning going,” says Pat Harris, a family therapist. “I hand it out to my clients because kids need guidance on the Internet.” To get the free Get Ahead list of web sites, go to TeachersToTeachers.com (scroll down).
