Must-Have Education for Teadhers and Parents  available at www.VisualAndActive.com
Hello, Parents,

This web site is for you.  At least once a week you hear about a fabulous web site that your child simply "must" visit.  Dozens of experts recommend an article on the Internet...
"Here's a video that your child needs to see..."

Who has time to download these items?

Now you can find thousands of free books on the Internet... yes, THOUSANDS.  Go to
Gutenberg.org and download them.  Or you can let a teacher download the books for you....

Which books are the best for your child?
Which books are probably not useful for a person under 18 years old?
Let's discover the right mix of innovation and tradition.  How can CDs and DVDs support your child's education?

List of CDs
**
The Summer Reading CD for 2006 -- Mr. Mac's selection of great speeches, video instructions and books in text format.

Great Speeches -- over 60 speeches by Martin Luther King, Jr., Churchill, FDR, etc. The mp3 format allows you to place these audio treasures on your child's audio device.  Repeated listening leads to better understanding of history, because "you are there" when you listen to these speeches.

In Praise of Small Schools -- Mr. Mac talks about the reason why Bill Gates favors smaller size of school more than size of classroom.  (10 minutes)

How to Use Skype.com to Connect with Friends in other countries -- This CD contains video clips demonstrating how to get connected with skype.com, the world's leading over-the-internet telephone service for FREE computer-to-computer calls.  (20 minutes)

Put Something Useful on That iPod -- tips from Mr. Mac about how to get excellent materials (speeches, audio books, inspiring quotes, vocabulary words, scienceFriday.com) on your child's mp3 player.  (20 minutes with video on CD)

Quotations To Inspire Mentors  -- schools need dozens of mentors -- maybe you?  Listen to the quotations and be filled with the desire to serve.  ($10, with proceeds donated to BigPicture.org)

Visual and Active SAT Method -- WOW!  There is a visual and active way to learn vocabulary and handle the math on the college entrance test called SAT.  ($10)  Learn about the techniques at VisualAndActive.com

Audio CDs by Pat Harris, Licenced Marriage and Family Therapist

**
After the Storm -- just what hurricane survivors need.
Bullying -- Taking Care of Just You  -- with a review of the Duluth model
A CD for Teenagers -- 12 minutes, including a discussion of "cracking'
A CD for Elementary School Students -- 14 minutes

Frequently Asked Questions

1.  Where are the free books online?
Go to
www.Gutenberg.org.

2.  How long does it take to download 600 books?
About 14 hours.  That's too long for most parents, so I created a CD with a variety of audio books and speeches in addition to the 35 books (and 250 web pages) that I've downloaded.

The "Summer Reading CD" is available at 5 locations in Broward and Dade Counties.

Why is learning to use Skype so important?
By Steve McCrea , Educator

About 20 percent of the students in the USA do not have broadband connection. They can't use SKYPE, free software that allows free connection
by voice and by video computer-to-computer -- and skype also can call telephones at a low cost of 33 cents per minute.  But using the Summer Reading CD (www.TeacherToTeachers.com), they can read and learn the pages of the skype web site and prepare themselves for using Skype when they encounter it.

Skype can build international bridges. Skype can bring people closer. Skype can prepare you for working with people in other cities and other countries. Skype can increase opportunities and reduce misunderstandings.

Let's talk about other ways to use Skype... I'm online
SteveFortLauderdale

Frequently Asked Questions
1. I thought that only stuff that is in the public domain is on this summer reading CD. Why do you promote Skype and other commercial web sites?
ANSWER: it's all about reading, access and the level playing field. If I ask some students (who have broadband access) to go to Skype.com and learn the terms of the web site, I can ask ALL students to do the same... even the students who don't have web access ... that's right, even kids without a computer can partcipate because they can use the CD when they go to the main library or when they visit a friend with a CD.

I predict that most middle schools will have a project where all students need to form teams and try to find a SKYPE user on each continent, with parental approval. "Hello, I'm 13 years old and I'm looking for a young person in another country to exchange emails and messages. I want to learn about other countries. Can you find someone in your neighborhood to talk with me?"

This is similar to a project conducted several years ago in Israel and Jordan. Hundreds of children received calling cards. They were encouraged to call community centers in another city, so Israeli kids contacted families in Jordan and Jordanian kids contacted families in Israel. The key was using the phone cards, so that the caller ID could be blocked for safety.

The program was popular with Israelis and Jordanians who participated because the phone cards got arond the security checks and other barriers to getting to know people from a different culture.

Skype.com can bring us closer. This is why BuildingInternationalBridges.com, a non profit educational web site that aims to reduce tension through increased contacts, has the SKYPE link on its web page.

2. When can I contact you, Steve?
ANSWER I'm usually available between 7 and 11 pm Florida time (NEW YORK). If not, leave a message on the Skype voicemail or send me an email message to talkinternational@yahoo.com

10 paces back

A reporter did a story on
gender roles in Kabul, Afghanistan, several years before the Afghan
conflict. She noted that
women customarily walked 5 paces behind their
husbands.

She recently returned to Kabul and observed that women still walk
behind their husbands. Despite the
overthrow of the oppressive Taliban regime,
the women now seem to walk 10 paces behind their husbands, even further back -- and the women appear to be happy to maintain the old custom.

The reporter approached one of the Afghani women and asked,
"Why
do you now seem happy with the old custom that you once tried so desperately to change?"

Without hesitation, the woman said, "Land mines."

1.     How can parents get free books from the internet? Download the books.

2.     How much time does it take to download free books?  1 minute per book

3.     Where are the web sites for free books?  Search “online books”

4.     How do the web sites differ?  Some sites divide books into chapters, which are difficult to download.

5.     What are the advantages of Project Gutenberg?  (one page for the whole book)

6.     What are the downsides to Gutenberg?  (some books have no pictures)

7.     How many books are on Gutenberg?  18,000

8.     What is special about visiting Gutenberg between July 4 and August 4?  There will be 300,000 books available to download at no charge.

9.     Wow!  Yes, but it takes about a minute to search and download one book, so 100 books could take two hours.

10.                        What is the alternative?   Pick up a CD at a local school – five locations in South Florida.
Put 100 bricks in a closed room with an open window. Then send  3 candidates into the room and close the door. Leave them alone, come back after 10 minutes, and then analyze the situation:

If they are counting the bricks, put them in the accounting department.

If they are recounting them, put them in auditing.

If they have messed up the whole place with the bricks, put them in engineering.

If they are arranging the bricks in some strange order, put them in planning.

If they are throwing the bricks at each other, put them in operations.

If they are sleeping, put them in security

If they have broken the bricks into pieces, put them in information technology.

If they are sitting idle, put them in human resources.

If they say they have tried different combinations, yet not a brick has been moved, put them in sales.

If they have already left for the day, put them in marketing.

If they are staring out of the window, put them in strategic planning.

If they are talking to each other, and not a single brick has been moved, congratulate them and put them in top management.

Finally, if they have surrounded themselves with bricks in such a way that they can neither be seen nor heard from, put them in Congress.

Put Something Useful On Your Child’s iPod

By Steve McCrea
Education Specialist
Founder, CDsForParents.com

Welcome!  Here are your easy “how-to” instructions

Step 1  -- Find an iPod or mp3 player.

Step 2  -- Connect the device to a computer.

Step 3 -- Insert the CD and transfer audio files to the ipod or mp3 device.

Step 4 -- Connect the headphones, give the iPod to your child and watch the faces. “Yuck!” and “whoa, where did you get THAT?!” and “Who is this Churchill guy?   He talks funny.”
Your suggestions are invited.
Steve McCrea
Tutor and education specialist
SteveEnglishTeacher@yahoo.com
www.CDsForParents.com

It’s all about putting data into your head.   Electronic books (ebooks) are available at
www.gutenberg.org and at www.CDsForParents.com    NOTE:  The “iPod” is a trademark of Apple Computers and “mp3 player” is the general term for a device that plays mp3 files.

Don’t Panic, Parents!

Yes, your home has been invaded by a small item carried in your child’s pocket.   Strings dangle from your child’s ears.  What is going on in there?

Compare the Sony Walkman (for audio tape) or the CD player.   Both require more battery power than an mp3 player, so your child is actually saving you money!  The digital audio device uses fewer batteries each month.

The iPOD as a Teaching Tool

Take a moment and read the suggestions in “For Teachers” on this CD (in this booklet).  You are a teacher, too, and you can extend your child’s education with interesting speeches and books on tape that you find on the Internet.

Set an example
> Listen to National Public Radio, not music, when in the car.
(Listening to music once or twice forces the brain to seek the lyrics -- educational.  Listening to a song more than twice is entertaining.   NPR and some talk radio are educational because your vocabulary center of the brain is engaged.)
> Find interesting spoken work on audio mp3 files or on the radio.
> Use an ipod for your chores, listening to interesting interviews from sciencefriday.com
> Ask your child to show you how to use ipodder.com or “Juice”, software that is used to download mp3 files.

For Teachers

Yes, your school probably has rules about the use of iPods and mp3 players.  Most schools have decreed:  No digital devices in the classroom!

Too bad.
It’s a shame.
What a pity.
Such a waste of an opportunity.

For many students, learning by doing is a feature of their learning method.  Through trial and error, many students learn how to transfer mp3 audio files to their mp3 players and how to shuffle the order of playing and select their favorite pieces.  Most of these pieces are music files.  What if teachers and parents gave students mp3 files that had educational merit and purpose?

Here are some suggestions
1. Record your own mp3 files, listing key points that you want students to master.
2. Find mp3 files on the internet and distribute the files for educational use
3. Encourage your students to demonstrate their understanding by creating their own mp3 files.
4. Some students will figure out
how to edit mp3 files – why not accept an essay on audio?  And then submit it to National Public Radio or other broadcast outlets?  Current.tv might find the student’s output useful.

Why should we adults encourage the use of spoken audio? Because spelling is not required for success.  Many politicians have found success through extemporaneous speaking.  “Free styling” has supported the lifestyles of many hip-hop stars – and these performers are often recording as they perform.  Why not encourage your students who are audio learners to use ipods or mp3 players?

Send your suggestions to Steve McCrea at steveEnglishTeacher@yahoo.com or visit CDsforParents.com and read the suggestions of other teachers and parents.

For Students
Well, your school probably has rules about the use of iPods and mp3 players.   Even your cell phone has to be off or out of sight.  (Some of my students say, “That sucks,” but I think only vacuum cleaners and people using straws do that).

So what if most schools have decided that you should not use a digital device in the classroom – you and I know that mp3 rocks and rules.  (Did I get the slang correct?)

It’s a shame that teachers are missing an opportunity to use mp3 and ipods to make teaching more interesting.   Perhaps you can show your teacher that speeches by famous people can be understood better when THEY read it (and you listen).  Reading is so boring sometimes… it just sounds better when we can listen to the man or woman who gave the original speech.

So go ahead, make a copy of this CD and give it to your teacher.   Sure, go ahead, everything on this CD is in the PUBLIC DOMAIN (that’s a cool phrase).

If you need some more ideas, look at the “For Teachers” and “For Parents” pages.

Send your suggestions to me and I’ll include the best suggestions in the next edition of “Put Something Useful On Your Child’s iPod.”

Yes, you can get FREE stuff to listen to for your iPod.  Your child can be listening to Churchill and hearing discussions about scientific problems.  Go ahead,
put something EDUCATIONAL on that iPod!
