Message to the Media
Local angle on national event about electronic books
School gives away free CD of electronic books for students and parents

Dear Reporter,

I have a story suggestion that may be of interest tto parents and students.  Every school year it’s the same old thing –

Will kids pass the FCAT?

Will a school measure up?

“How do our students compare to kids in other countries?”

Then, with summer break, teachers and parents have to deal with students who’d rather play than study. There are also those who, even if they want to study, can’t afford the learning material.

Now there’s a way to get our students to actually LEARN SOMETHING during their summer vacation…and
get
free summer reading CDs so anyone, adults and children, can get ahead.

How many people realize that:
It costs on average $30 in a typical parent’s time to go to the library five times to pick up  the 45 books a year that  high school students are asked to read.

A parent who buys these books will spend close to $200.

There are
37 branches of the public library system in Broward County – and over 58,000 middle and 73,000 high school students (in PUBLIC SCHOOLS).   If every student tried to check out the assigned books, how many of those students would actually find the book available?   The Broward library system has 10 copies of White Fang by Jack London.

I hope you will cover this important national event (30 days of free downloads of 300,000 books) with this local angle:
“Get 30 ebooks free on a CD – just pick it up at several local schools.”

There are five ways to open doors.  Two of them depend on luck or chance (what schools we went to and the economic status of our parents).

This is fun

10 paces back

A reporter did a story on
gender roles in Kabul, Afghanistan, several years before the Afghan
conflict. She noted that
women customarily walked 5 paces behind their
husbands.

She recently returned to Kabul and observed that women still walk
behind their husbands. Despite the
overthrow of the oppressive Taliban regime,
the women now seem to walk 10 paces behind their husbands, even further back -- and the women appear to be happy to maintain the old custom.

The reporter approached one of the Afghani women and asked,
"Why
do you now seem happy with the old custom that you once tried so desperately to change?"

Without hesitation, the woman said, "Land mines."

The three questions
1.  what do you remember learning in Middle School that you continue to use today?   (what continues to be relevant?)
2.  What do you find useful that you could have learned in Middle School but didn't?  (A suggestion to middle school teachers)
3.  What are you reading today that you find useful?  (give an example about how you are continuing to learn and take time for reading books and articles).
Your replies to these questions will be shown to middle school and high school students.  The idea is to increase relevance and to help students see that adults can be mentors…
