A “no school” day doesn’t have to be a day for watching TV and playing video games. Children face a more competitive world and they need to prepare now to “get ahead.” Steve McCrea, educator and producer of educational DVDs and CDs, has compiled a list of over 200 educational web sites and 54 “things to do” in a new book called “The Get Ahead Book.” The book includes a DVD to help students who are visual and audio learners. “There are at least eight ways of learning,” McCrea explains, “including social learning, This program is designed to be used with parents as well as solo learning.” McCrea worked with parents of his students to find alternatives to video games. The parents themselves needed a direction to send their children to. The Get Ahead book grew out of the long lists of web sites that McCrea recommends for students. “I made a web site, TeachersToTeachers.com, with active links to the sites mentioned in the book, so you don’t have to type – everything is just two clicks away.” McCrea encourages parents to watch the DVD with their child and set up a daily routine of ten minutes use, with five minutes spent by the student explaining new information that has been found on the web site.
