What Should Students Learn.com Presents... A new product under development: The Parent Pest PARENTS: This web page will improve video games |
Dear Parent Imagine a way for you to put your wisdom, your experience, your parents' wisdom on a short audio recording, one sentence at a time (while interrupting your child's video game): "Slow and steady wins the race" "A positive mental attitude." "It's a glorious day, filled with love, opportunity and potential" (Marshall Thurber) Your child (like most children) learns through listening. Everyone likes to hear a story. Why read when someone can read to you? "Tell me a story." The goal of this web page is to inspire you, the parent, to find a product that does the following: 1. the product will pause the video game 2. the product will introduce video and audio information to inspire your child and help your child review for a test or for future life challenges 3. the product will return the child to the video game. 4. How to distribute the product: the first level is distributed by share ware rules -- please pay to help us develop more items for the library. 5. The product works in the background using the screensaver software found on many computers. 6. the product is easy to use and can be easily removed. That's the goal. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here are the guidelines from a teacher. 1. The program needs to stop or pause the game without hurting the player. (no loss of points, no loss of status…) 2. There could be a standard screen view “And now a few words to inspire us. From ParentPest.com” 3. The volume could be turned down by the student, yes. But will most kids play the game with the sound on? In case the student is avoiding a message by audio, we need to also have some video… So there could be a series of photos with written messages that flash that come from the library. 4. Most kids like to be read to, most kids like to hear a story. What is the best format for the stories? Broken into pieces? Or continuous. 5. There could be a series of sentences, between four and ten seconds long, that interrupt the game. The sentences could connect or they can be stand-alone quotes to inspire and educate. Examples From the Library of information We tend to move toward things we think about. SO let’s think about good things. The capital of Afghanistan is Kabul “KAH bull.” C is for Carbon, S is for Sulfur Na is Sodium. Sodium Chloride NaCl If you come up with other ideas of types of messages, let me know. 6. I can create a series of mp3 files. Tell me what dimensions are best. I think I saw in a program that there are small 7. If the child wants to listen to the academic pause in the game, (called the AP or “academic pause”), then the student knows that the information is going to go quickly back The child cannot speed up the reading, the child cannot override the screen saver, the child decides that there is no point in trying to reduce or eliminate the messages from “parentPest.com”… IT’s easier to just wait for 10 seconds and continue the game. 8.Is it possible to set the screen saver on 2 minutes 90 seconds or 60 seconds? There needs to be an academic pause (AP) every one minute, best, but it can be up to 2 minutes. In one hour there will be 60 pieces of information at 1 minute per interruption. 9. Each AP (academic pause) includes an AUDIO recording and a VIDEO still picture. Is that the easiest way to do it? Or is it better to have short video, up to 10 seconds long 10. Perhaps the best way to deliver the software is by web download. Some CDs can be sent to oprah and other writers so that the program can be tested…. But the general public should download the program. For kids without internet, no problem. Just give them the CD. Question. How do we interfere with an Xbox and PSP game player? |
